Located on Charansanitwong Road in Bangkok, a beehive of labor activity swells as construction workers hustle their way through the day. This bustling scene is a depiction of the increasing Thai labor force exported globally. Pairoj Chotikasatien, the director-general of the Department of Employment under the Labour Ministry, has set a target of sending a whopping 100,000 skilled workforce abroad next year. This ambition corresponds to the policy propagated by the latest Labour Minister, Phiphat Ratchakitprakarn, known for his insistence in escalating the number of Thai employees working overseas.

The Employment Department is hoped to play a vital role in facilitating and supporting the Thai laborers in discovering gainful employment options in foreign nations, according to Mr. Pairoj. This includes not just seeking opportunities in new markets but also saturating the existing ones with a high demand for labor. Speaking of new horizons, countries such as Sweden, Finland, Israel, Japan, South Korea, and Taiwan are on top of the list where the Department seeks to send more Thai workers.

Highlighting the strategy, Mr. Pairoj expressed his plan of exporting primarily skilled Thai workforce to these expanding markets which are showing growing interest in Thai laborers. There are an array of job roles in which Thai workers have shown expertise. For instance, Thai nurses and wellness workers have caught the eye of Saudi Arabia. The same goes for Thai builders, airport and railway station service providers, healthy business personnel for Qatar, and farmers for Jordan and Portugal.

On the same note, New Zealand seems to be very keen on welcoming Thai employees for roles in the service and agricultural sectors. The land of Kiwis also opens doors for Thai professionals such as architects, dentists, and nurses. A special shout out goes to Australia, which has shown a great interest in Thai chefs, particularly those certified by the Department of Skill Development, shared Mr. Pairoj.

The next move of the department, as mentioned by Mr. Pairoj, will involve entering into negotiations with nations concerning the employment of Thai workers. Furthermore, it calls for thorough talks with the private Thai sector – focusing on discussions centered on lawful issues like contracts, measures, and exportation processes.

The director-general has invited those Thai interested in working overseas to reach out to their provincial department offices located, or the Bangkok Employment Office. These entities can be reached through the hotline 1506, or by visiting doe.go.th/overseas for more information. The world is small and well within the reach of the skilled Thai workforce ready to take on global opportunities.
