On an unforgettable Saturday, over 300 Thai Muslims alongside Palestinians chose to express their frustrations at the escalating situation in Gaza. As their voices echoed off the walls of the Israeli embassy in Bangkok, their message was loud and clear. They were there to denounce the dual roles of Israel and the United States in the unending bombardment of Gaza and to call out what they labeled as “genocide.”
The unique and diverse group of demonstrators, consisting of Muslims hailing from the five southern border provinces and Palestinians residing in Thailand, convened at Ocean Tower II, the address of the Israeli embassy in Watthana district. The human wave of outcry formed at the gates around 9:30 AM, brimming with passionate indignation.
Although this passionate protest could’ve spiraled out of control, a battalion of police officers neatly threaded around the perimeter of the building ensured a steady order. Their presence was subtle, providing a safety net without infringing upon the protesters’ right to voice their grievances. Additionally, dedicated traffic police officers were at hand to ensure vehicular movement wasn’t disrupted.
As the demonstration moved forward, various protest leaders rose from the crowd. They aimed their verbal artillery at Israel, condemning the unceasing plight in Gaza, with each loudspeaker increasingly critical of the U.S for its unwavering support to Israel.
Emblematic of their support for Hamas militants squaring off against the Israeli army, protesters resorted to trampling and later, burning an Israeli flag. This visual metaphor truly encapsulated the boiling sentiments at the heart of the rally that day.
At the forefront of the rally was Chaiyid Sulaiman Huzainee, a respected Islamic leader. He exposed his views on Israel’s usage of weaponry, alleging it to be an instrument for 75 years of Palestinian genocide. Openly critiquing the U.S for its role, he voiced, “We are in Thailand and cannot bear arms, but we’ll do what is within our capacity.”
With an odd blend of passion and pacifism, Huzainee declared, “As Thais, we wouldn’t wreak havoc in our motherland. We won’t be discouraged by Israel’s oppression. Accepting tyranny is greater evil.” He articulates that unrest in Palestine threatens global peace and criticizes the United Nations for their bias. He furthers that albeit their label as terrorists, Hamas is compelled to fight back.
Huzainee confidently assured the safety of Thai workers held hostage by Hamas, expressing hope for their imminent release. He denounced the media’s labelling of Hamas as terrorists, drawing the demonstration to an end around noon. This controversial protest was notably ignited by Hamas’ surprise attack on Israel last October, which resulted in the captivity of 200 citizens, including 19 Thai laborers. The ensuing conflict unfortunately claimed the lives of 30 Thai individuals.
