Dense in history and oozing opulence, a marvelous British mansion that was a royal residence of King Prajadhipok during the late 1930s following his voluntary abdication from the Thai throne is now up for grabs. Carrying a price tag of a whopping £5.5 million, approximately equivalent to 240 million baht, it beckons to luxury home-hunters with a taste for regal charm.
Nestled near the quaint village of Biddenden in Kent, it’s a mere 70 kilometers southeast of the bustling city of London. This 27 ha property, named Vane Court, is a piece of architecture that has seen the passage of time since 1419, according to the listing by the luxury real estate mogul, Savills.
“A dwelling steeped in centuries of fascinating history, Vane Court carries the unique distinction of being a former royal abode,” elaborates Will Peppitt, the overseer of southeastern sales at Savills. “Potential buyers now have a golden opportunity to sleep in the erstwhile bedroom of the King of Siam or bask in the afternoon sun by the aptly named ‘King’s Pond’.”
The 604-year-old mediaeval manor, as per Savills, has undergone a meticulous restoration process. Its impressive architecture boasts six luxurious bedrooms and four lavish bathrooms. The grandeur of the timber-framed mansion is further accentuated by an original entrance hall on the ground floor. A majestic oak staircase and a sunny, south-facing drawing room outfitted with a cozy fireplace and a wood burner add to its allure.
But the spoils don’t end within this stately structure. The outdoor grounds feature meticulously manicured formal gardens, a separate, charming sunken rose garden, a tennis court for sports aficionados, and a large heated swimming pool for relaxation and recreation. The King’s Pond, complete with its own picturesque bridge, offers a serene retreat.
“With swift and expedient transport links to London in close proximity, Vane Court stands as a perfect epitome of countryside living in England’s garden,” asserted Mr. Peppitt.
However, this haven of tranquillity faced turbulent times during the onset of World War II. When Vane Court was seized for war-related objectives, the royal couple had to relocate to a leased property at Virginia Water in Surrey. Unfortunately, this is where King Prajadhipok met with his demise due to heart failure, at the relatively young age of 47.
