The province’s governor, Narong Woonciew, announced on Wednesday that a tsunami evacuation rehearsal would be held on July 20 as a result of increasing local residents’ concerns following a series of underwater earthquakes close to the Nicobar Islands. He asserted that the National Disaster Warning Center conducts “strict surveillance of all aspects that may trigger earthquakes and tsunamis.” He declared that his business is prepared for a tsunami. Every Wednesday at eight in the morning, the national song was played to test the 19 warning towers that were scattered throughout Phuket. In order to be appropriately prepared, Mr. Udomporn stated that on July 20, a tsunami evacuation exercise would begin at 10am in Phuket’s Thalang region. According to Udomporn Kan, head of the Phuket disaster prevention and mitigation office, the July 3 sea waves surged onshore due to the strong southwest monsoon, excessive rainfall, and high sea tide. Fear was caused by the flooding of many seashore roads, most notably Hat Sai Kaew. The initial warning would include information about the earthquake’s magnitude. People would be urged to prepare for an evacuation in the second alarm. He went on to say that district authorities would meet with all pertinent agencies ahead to the drill to plan and be ready to act in an emergency.
The provincial disaster prevention and mitigation office, the deputy governor Anuparp Rodkwan Yodrabam, and other institutions have been given instructions by the governor to keep a careful eye on the situation, the governor declared. We have been prepared for it ever since the 2004 tsunami that hit Phuket, said Mr. Narong, adding that they had been given instructions to make sure that the employees, construction crews, and equipment were ready to react in the case of a tsunami. We must resist being complacent. Safety of people is of highest significance, “He announced. According to Mr. Udomporn, Thailand was not significantly affected by the 23 earthquakes of about 4.7 magnitude that were noted on July 4-5 off the Nicobar Islands, which are located about 540 kilometers northwest of Phuket. “You can be assured that there was no tsunami as a result of the high tide. A tsunami can only be produced by earthquakes along the Nicobar fault line that have a Richter magnitude of seven or greater. Residents of coastal areas would receive alerts in the event of a tsunami. Notifications would also be sent out in five more languages, including English, Thai, Japanese, Chinese, and Russian. The navy’s wave monitoring station on Koh Miang, off the coast of Phangnga province, also detected these tremors.
