Padang Besar in Malaysia and Hat Yai in southern Thailand are connected by the Shuttle Train. Tickets are only 50 baht, or 7 Malaysian ringgits, and the trip takes around an hour. Two trains each day (number 947) will go from Thailand to Mayasia at 7:30am and 2:00pm (number 949). The service was briefly suspended by the Malaysian government in March 2020 as a Covid-19 prevention measure, however it will resume operations on Friday, July 15. Before boarding their train to Thailand, Malaysians traveling by train into that country must check in with Thai immigration officials at Padang Besar station.
On Friday, the Shuttle Train that connects Thailand and Malaysia will restart operations after a two-year hiatus. The route, which is run by Thailand’s State Railway of Thailand (SRT), connects Hat Yai station in Songkhla province, southern Thailand, with Padang Besar station in Perlis, Malaysia. Because the service is anticipated to be popular, make sure to purchase your tickets in advance on the SRT website. Before departing, always research the entrance criteria of your destination. Every day, there will be two trains that travel from Malaysia to Thailand: one at 8:55 am (number 948) and another at 3:40 pm (number 950). After the epidemic, travel between Thailand and Malaysia is likely to increase with the reopening of the Hat Yai-Padang Besar shuttle train, especially now that the majority of entry restrictions for both countries have been lifted. The Shuttle Train is a dated train with only fans for air conditioning. However, the trip only takes an hour.
Cost of a railway ticket between Thailand and Malaysia is about 50 baht (RM7)
