According to the British embassy in Bangkok, a staggering 378 air passengers have already been apprehended for smuggling cannabis into the UK. Even more alarming, an astonishing 15 tonnes of the substance have been seized at UK airports so far in 2024. To put this into perspective, this amount is nearly triple the five tonnes seized in 2023, when 136 people were arrested.
Diving deeper into the details, it’s evident that Thailand, Canada, and the United States are the principal sources of the seized cannabis. Out of all the arrests this year, 184 cases were linked to cannabis originating from Thailand, 75 cases from Canada, and 47 cases from the US. These gangs exploit the legal status of cannabis in certain regions to access the drug and then recruit couriers to transport it to the UK.
