In the wake of intensified joint operations between Thailand and Cambodia, four more Thai nationals, implicated in a notorious scam ring linked to a catastrophic family incident in Samut Prakan, have been apprehended in Poipet. The culprits have been extradited to Thailand to face legal implications. The deportation operation was conducted via the Poipet-Aranyaprathet checkpoint, according to Pol Col Rung Thongmon, the head of Sa Kaeo immigration police.
News of their arrest broke on a late Monday evening when Cambodian immigration officials reached out to their Thai counterparts about the impending deportation procedures. They notified Thai law enforcement that they were deporting one Thai male and three Thai females, suspected to be running a phone scam operation based in Cambodia.
Earlier in the week, Deputy national police chief Pol Gen Surachate Hakparn had noted that this nefarious gang had been instrumental in triggering a horrific family tragedy in Samut Prakan, where a man resorted to killing his wife and two sons in their home based in Bang Phli district. The trigger was purportedly the man’s wife falling trap to this gang’s elaborate scam network, thereby accumulating a massive debt. The man later attempted to end his own life unsuccessfully.
Pol Col Rung also mentioned the arrest of an additional Thai national in Cambodia on charges of unlawful entry, who was also subsequently deported to Thailand. The officers on duty at the Thai-Cambodian friendship bridge, a mixed group of Aranyaprathet district chief Chakkrapong Phanchot, immigration officers, local policemen and soldiers, awaited the arrival of all five suspects on Monday evening. They subsequently apprehended them upon their return.
The accused quartet was then escorted to the Aranyaprathet immigration checkpoint office for subsequent legal proceedings. All had been previously targeted by arrest warrants issued by the Samut Prakan Provincial Court for their involvement in fraud, illegal activities related to computer systems, and transnational crime. The Aranyaprathet district office’s Facebook page identified the male suspect as Suphon Wongwian, whereas the female accomplices were named as Kanokporn Kraisuk, Nisarat Sukkasem, and Kornkanok Singthit. During interrogation, the group conceded to being the individuals named in the arrest warrants, an admission corroborated by Pol Col Rung. The group was handed over to Bang Phli police for further legal proceedings.
The fifth deported individual, apprehended for illegally stepping foot in Cambodia, was penalized with a fine before being released. Police clarified that he was not implicated in any other criminal activities.
