A multinational endeavor brokered by Thai and Myanmar authorities is currently underway with the aim of repatriating 120 Thai citizens back to their native country. Kanchana Patarachok, an authoritative mouthpiece for the Foreign Ministry, shed light on the operation in a Sunday communique. According to the details, the contingent of Thais in dire straits in Myanmar consists of 90 men and 30 women, allegedly deceived by an internet syndicate into taking up unnamed work in the region of Laukkaing, a northern pocket of Myanmar’s Shan State nestled intimately close to the Chinese border.
The spokesperson, Ms. Kanchana, indicated that the specific nature of the Thais’ work abroad hadn’t immediately come to light during the initial stages of these unfolding events. Making the matter more intricate, she elaborated her previous discourse by mentioning a recent relayed message from Mongkol Wisitstump. As the Thai ambassador to Yangon, Mongkol communicated to the Thai Foreign Ministry that concrete steps had been taken to ensure the safe return of the stranded residents. Working in synergy, the Thai embassy partnered with the Foreign Ministry of Myanmar, the immigration office of Laukkaing in Shan State, and a host of other locally influential Myanmar agencies, to devise a strategic plan for facilitating the safety and welfare of the Thai citizens.
As night fell on Saturday, the Thai embassy confirmed that efforts to rescue the Thais had borne fruit, with a total of 120 Thais being successfully drawn out from Laukkaing locale. In collaboration with the Myanmar army, who fortified the effort with provisions of food and shelter, they managed to maintain adequate living conditions for the rescued individuals. Additionally, proactive steps were taken by the embassy, petitioning Myanmar authorities for the identities of the 120 Thais. Furthermore, it was noted that communication was made with the immigration office in Laukkaing to extend their search scope and aid any other Thai nationals still tethered to the town.
Bolstering her narrative further, Ms. Kanchana shed more light on the dynamic conversations that are now unfolding regarding repatriation of the Thai contingent. Conversations with the Myanmar authorities indicated that the return of the Thais might be facilitated either aerially from Yangon, or by terrestrial means from Tachilek to Mae Sai district nestled in the northern Thai province of Chiang Rai. So the relentless efforts towards securing the safety of Thai citizens in Myanmar continue, characterized by a blend of diplomacy, humanitarian efforts, and relentless determination to ensure their safe return.
