In a solemn announcement by the Chula Rajamontri Office, it was disclosed that Chula Rajamontri Asis Pitakkumpol departed this life and entered into the eternal mercy of Allah at the precise time of 10:32am. The moment was marked with profound respect, and a grand mournfulness swept over the nation. A man of Asis’s stature had vacated his earthly duties and embraced the divine call.
The office, serving as the messenger of this heartrending news, conveyed that a spiritual rite in Asis’s honour is scheduled. This prayer observance is set to echo through the vaulted corridors of the Songkhla Central Mosque, initiating at 10am on the first Monday following the announcement. The ceremony was intended to commemorate his life, appreciate his contributions, and bid him an affectionate farewell.
Previously on Friday, it had been broadcast that Asis had been in a fragile state of health and had been admitted to the hospital. In a mark of his high standing and respect, he was accorded the privilege of becoming a patient under His Majesty the King’s patronage. The office, recognizing the gravity of the situation, had fervently requested the Muslim community nationwide to offer prayers of well-being for Asis.
Asis carried an illustrious heritage within him. He was born under the bright sun of March 6, 1947, in the vibrant and energetic tambon Hua Khao, located in the Singha Nakhon district of Songkhla province. Being brought up amidst two sisters and a younger brother, Asis infused familial harmony into his life. Furthermore, his genealogical roots traced back to Sultan Sulaiman Shah, the well-regarded governor of Songkhla in history’s golden pages.
On May 16, 2010, Asis was bestowed with the honour of becoming the 18th Chula Rajamontri. This esteemed position was no accident but the result of a democratic process. Members of Islamic committees nationwide had personally elected him, recognizing his virtues and leadership qualities.
However, as life goes on, with its high and lows, a tragic incident occurred on the following Saturday. Asis’s brother, Loh Pitakkumpol, aged 71, experienced a fatal encounter. He was viciously attacked at a local food shop in Moo 4 village in Tambon Hua Khao. The assailant, Rorhim Kongkalimin, aged 47, was suspected to be under a pharmaceutically induced influence when he launched the attack. Remarkably, he targeted Loh Pitakkumpol although there was no known prior acquaintance between them.
In summary, the nation mourns the loss of two notable individuals from the same family, one a spiritual leader of repute and the other, a victim of a senseless act. Their memories live on, and their stories continue to inspire and caution us in their unique ways.
