On Kan Chompalang’s Facebook page, a snapshot of Bangkok’s street life surfaces in a rather unsettling manner. Framed in these digital windows are images of Chinese women, some barely out of their teen years, seeking alms along the city’s bustling streets. The apparent deformities on their faces and missing hands inadvertently draw gasps from passersby, serving as somber testimonials of unimaginable hardship.

This unusual and troubling sight instigated an investigation led by the local police. Based on an incident reported by a local resident, Kanthat Pongpaiboonvej, affectionately known by his fellow citizens as the “good Samaritan,” a mysterious woman dressed in a school uniform with facial disfigurements was spotted soliciting alms in the bustling Pin Klao area on November 10th.

In an association reminiscent of a high school classroom, this woman bore the unmistakable semblance of a student. Yet, her peculiar predicament and furrowed countenance told a tale far removed from the familiar narratives of school life. Prompted by deep concerns and a desire to help, Mr. Kanthat ushered the woman to the safe confines of the Bang Phlat police station for an interview.

But, the testament of this one woman spiraled into a larger narrative as Mr. Kanthat revealed that he received reports of six more similar incidents spotted elsewhere across the city. These women, too, wore school uniforms that seemed to contrast starkly with their life. Some bore missing limbs and shared the same unsettling facial deformities, akin to the woman found in Pin Klao. They too seemed less like eager students and more like living replicas of this lamentable trend.

Currently, the city’s diligent police force has successfully located two of these women. However, the hunt is still underway for the remaining four women, and the investigation continues unabated. The mystery behind these women’s deformed faces and missing limbs is still unfolding, casting a most unusual shadow over the otherwise vibrant streets of Bangkok.

The story of these women is a chilling reminder of the realities many silently endure. It also speaks to the diligence of local individuals like Mr. Kanthat and organizations such as the Bangkok police, tirelessly working to create a city where citizens aren’t reduced to these extremes.
