Rising from the ashes of her past, Wunpen, a courageous 26-year-old woman from Buriram province’s Ban Ngang district, has faced adversity time and again. Her saga began in the bleak year of 2020, when she fell prey to a horrifying acid attack perpetrated by her former spouse. The act of violence left her with a scarred visage and a world plunged into darkness due to loss of sight.

However, fate showed no sign of relenting as the lady was struck once more with misfortune. Entangled in the cruel web spun by a moneylender, Wunpen was cheated out of her mortgaged motorbike. As per reports, the loan shark sold the young woman’s two-wheeled companion to an automotive enthusiast in his teens. Diligently, Wunpen registered her complaint with the local authorities today.

The brave woman narrated her predicament with stoic resolve. On the first day of September, Wunpen pawned her trusted Honda Wave 110 motorbike to settle a looming 2,400 baht debt. Her motorbike fetched her 6,000 baht. The loan shark deducted 900 baht as interest, 500 baht for parking costs, alongside the 2,400 baht debt she initially owed, remaining with her was a total of 2,200 baht.

According to the arrangement, Wunpen was given 30 days to retrieve her motorbike. Nonetheless, when she attempted to enforce this agreement prior to the start of October, her effort was rebuffed by the loan shark. What’s worse, the moneylender expanded the buy-back price to a staggering 25,000 baht.

Ever since she survived the gruesome acid attack in 2020, Wunpen has been determined to earn her livelihood. Unfazed, she employed her motorbike to sustain her fledgling business and attend medical consultations. She never anticipated the disheartening turn of events involving the loan shark.

Her report lodged at the Buriram City Police Station seems to have languished in the clutches of bureaucratic inertia as there has been no noteworthy development in her case to date. Meanwhile, Wunpen still longs for the return of her motorbike from either the unscrupulous moneylender or the individual who possesses it now.

In another development, a notable identity and her consort of 31 individuals stand accused of hoodwinking people into investing in spurious gemstones, thereby creating a financial vacuum exceeding 227 million baht. The Special Case Investigation Department (DSI) has slapped them with a lawsuit. Over 50,000 documents form the bedrock of this case. The accused individuals are expected to be presented before the prosecutor on September 28.

The DSI elaborated on the case, unmasking the primary accused as Wanthanee, also known as Mae Manee or ‘Mother of Gems’. She, along with her accomplices, enticed unsuspecting victims with flashy Facebook advertisements promising lucrative returns on gemstone investments.
