A spirit of unity was palpable on August 18, 2023, as over 2,500 participants – comprising team members, families, clients, and partners of UOB Thailand – converged for the annual UOB Global Heartbeat Run/Walk. This event, which is part of the bank’s notable volunteering and fundraising initiatives, demonstrated the strong sense of camaraderie within the organisation. A staggering sum of 4 million baht was raised from the event, all set aside to enrich the educational experience of underprivileged students in far-flung locations through UOB’s visionary My Digital Space programme.
Spanning 18 markets worldwide, the UOB Global Heartbeat Run/Walk is an embodiment of UOB’s commitment to its clients and localities. The proceedings raised in Thailand will be invested in the Thailand Collaboration for Education (TCFE), with the principal objective of equipping young minds with digital resources and comprehensive online education programmes.
“The cornerstone of our UOB Heartbeat corporate social responsibility contains a strong focus on employee volunteerism,” shared Mr Tan Choon Hin, President and Chief Executive Officer of UOB Thailand. He added, “We are unwavering in our resolve to bolster the advancement of the societies we operate within. Our colleagues, patrons, and associates come together annually for the UOB Global Heartbeat Run/Walk, contributing significantly towards the betterment of our communities. The resources assembled during the event will strengthen our My Digital Space programme. We aim to make quality education accessible for all students, notwithstanding their locations, thus bridging knowledge gaps and offering opportunities previously unavailable to them.”
The Thailand edition of the 2023 UOB Global Heartbeat Run/Walk unfurled on August 6, 2023, at the Suphachalasai National Stadium, in parallel with Vietnam’s event. Consequently, on August 12, China, Hong Kong, Indonesia, and Singapore followed suit with their physical UOB Global Heartbeat Run/Walk events, with UOB Malaysia scheduling theirs for August 27. Participants were immersed in engaging activities meticulously planned for both children and adults, along with captivating performances by the Surasakmontree School’s Brass Band.
Further cementing its commitment to sustainable endeavours, UOB Thailand rolled out various green initiatives during this year’s UOB Heartbeat Run/Walk. By fabricating running shirts from excess fabric from the fashion industry, the event managed to curtail its carbon footprint by an impressive 3,430 kg. This reduction is equivalent to travelling 28,840 kilometres by car. Other initiatives included specially designed medals that could double as coin pouches, strategically placed recycling bins for plastic water bottles, and comprehensive waste segregation stations. Even surplus food wasn’t wasted, with donations made to neighbouring communities.
The bank’s UOB Heartbeat Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) programme, of which the UOB Global Heartbeat Run/Walk is a crucial part, aims to foster enduring positive changes, propelling the formation of more empathetic and inclusive societies. Achieved through corporate philanthropy, synergistic partnerships with stakeholders, and proactive employee participation, these changes are in harmony with UOB’s core values of Honour, Enterprise, Unity, and Commitment. By uniting employees, customers, and business partners alike, UOB is dedicated to wielding a profound impact on our communities.
