Chiang Rai Scandal: Governor Charin Thongsuk Cracks Down on Kratom Café Supplying Teens

Just imagine the delightful setting of Chiang Rai, a fabulous little corner of Thailand where tradition meets a sprinkle of tranquility. Yet, beneath the surface of this peaceful façade lies an unexpected and rather scandalous tale involving, of all things, kratom tea and teenagers. Yes, indeed, a colorful scenario unfolded recently as local authorities descended upon a quaint café nestled comfortably on the meandering Jed Yod Road in the bustling Mueang district.

Imagine this: the air punctuated with click-clack sounds as students, ranging from just-three-years-shy-of-adulthood teens to those blossoming into young adulthood, gather to play mobile games and sip their kratom-infused teas. The piquant aroma of Mitragyna speciosa wafts through the air, adding a sense of rebellion to their caffeine-free rendezvous. The scene could be mistaken for a youthful tea party, if not for the fact that the drink of choice here was kratom tea—a stimulant that raised more than a few eyebrows among concerned residents. A call to action for sure!

Leading the charge, with the fervour of a detective unraveling a mystery was none other than Chiang Rai Governor Charin Thongsuk. Governor Charin, alongside an assemblage of dedicated police, district officials, and military personnel, executed the operation with the precision of a well-oiled machine. Their raid cracked open this secret but not-so-silent spectacle, grabbing the attention of the district.

Picture the authorities stepping into a hive of teenage escapades, where uniformed students perched around tables, digital screens casting a bluish glow upon their faces, and glasses clinking as they shared tales and sips of their forbidden brew. Governor Charin summed it up perfectly: “The café had become a meeting point where students would drink kratom tea and disturb nearby residents until late at night.” Not your average study session, it seems!

And there, presiding over these flamboyant gatherings was the café owner, Talan, a 35-year-old who perhaps thought himself a modern-day pied piper, plying his trade at 80 baht a glass. The law, however, is not a fan of adults serving kratom concoctions to minors without a license. Talan found himself marching towards unwelcome notoriety at the Mueang Chiang Rai Police Station, facing charges of illegal sales.

As for the Parisian chic students—entangled in this kratom net—they were handed over to the Chiang Rai Provincial Education Office, destined to face the consequences which the school rules had in store. “We take these incidents very seriously, and the students involved will face appropriate disciplinary measures,” an official stated, echoing the sentiments of educators who probably hoped the students could be lured back into more scholarly pursuits.

This escapade reveals a broader concern swirling around Chiang Rai and Thailand alike—the increasing misuse of kratom by minors. While not illegal in its essence, kratom’s sale under the table and its allure amongst young people has raised national alarms. But as efforts ramp up to curtail such untoward activities, only time will tell if teens will swap their kratom for educational endeavors.

As the sun sets on this uninterrupted string of events, Chiang Rai carries on, now a bit wiser and certainly more vigilant. With the buzz of the governor’s decisive actions still lingering in the air, one can only hope future chapters will involve more of Chiang Rai’s cultural finesse and less clandestine kratom sips behind café doors.

I can’t believe teens in Chiang Rai are into kratom now. It’s almost like they’ve opened a box of trouble with all this.

    • Kelsey L June 26, 2025

Kratom isn’t that big of a deal compared to other substances. Let them have their drinks!

      • Tom June 26, 2025

Whatever happened to juice bars or just good old bubble tea? Seems like kratom is just a bad influence.

        • Ryan_88 June 26, 2025

They want to be edgy, man. Kratom brings that sense of rebellion they’re looking for.

  2. Dr. Emily Thomas June 26, 2025

While kratom is legal, the real issue is unsupervised teenagers indulging in it without understanding potential toxicity.

    • Jake the Snake June 26, 2025

But is it any different than caffeine? Or sugar for that matter?

      • Dr. Emily Thomas June 26, 2025

Kratom can have opioid-like effects at higher doses, which is not the same as caffeine or sugar.

  3. Sarah June 26, 2025

Governor Charin is just doing his job. Can’t have teens running wild and causing disturbances.

  4. violin177 June 26, 2025

Are we seriously treating this like it’s a crack house? It’s just kratom for heaven’s sake.

    • Larry D June 26, 2025

It’s not just about the kratom, it’s about underage kids being exposed to it without restrictions.

      • violin177 June 26, 2025

Sure, but a full-on raid? Seems excessive.

  5. Marcus June 26, 2025

This is a wake-up call for parents. They need to keep an eye on where their kids are spending their time.

    • Allison June 26, 2025

Parental supervision can only go so far. Teens have ways to hide their activities.

  6. grower134 June 26, 2025

Honestly, I think the café owner is in the wrong. He should know better than to serve minors.

  7. Lucy June 26, 2025

What do you expect in a place like Chiang Rai? Always a mix of tradition and the modern world clashing!

  8. Jason_P June 26, 2025

If kratom’s the go-to trouble drink for these kids, maybe it’s time for better regulation?

  9. Maya L June 26, 2025

Everyone’s talking about kratom like it’s the devil. Weren’t energy drinks the same at one point?

    • Tim June 26, 2025

Energy drinks aren’t psychoactive, though. There’s a big difference.

      • Maya L June 26, 2025

I guess, but still, parents will look for trouble where they find it.

  10. Ron_super June 26, 2025

There should be more educational programs about substances like kratom. Information can be the best deterrent.

  11. Kelly Masters June 26, 2025

I wonder how many café owners are serving these kinds of beverages under the radar.

  12. Alan June 26, 2025

This isn’t about kratom. It’s about cracking down on anything that disturbs the peace.

  13. Lila June 26, 2025

Governor Charin is doing what’s right. Protecting the youth should be a priority.

  14. Nina June 26, 2025

Can we just let teenagers have fun as long as they’re safe? It feels like life’s too regulated.

    • Carrie J June 26, 2025

But their version of fun shouldn’t come at the expense of others’ peace or breaking the law.

  15. Sammy June 26, 2025

I bet this story is way more exciting than studying for any exam. Not surprised they got hooked.

  16. Jake June 26, 2025

Can’t blame the kids entirely. It’s a free market and kratom was sold legally, right?

  17. Lydia June 26, 2025

Chiang Rai has its charm, but perhaps the place needs a bit of modernization when it comes to managing youth engagement.

    • Kevin T June 26, 2025

Sometimes modernization only brings more problems, though.
