Prasittichai Khaokaeo, a former primary school director from Sing Buri, had his death sentence upheld by the Supreme Court on Wednesday for a brutal gold shop robbery in Lop Buri province in 2020, where he murdered three people, including a young child, and injured four others. Prasittichai’s heinous crimes made headlines on January 9, 2020, when he entered Robinson Department Store in Muang district, Lop Buri, carrying a 9mm handgun with a sound suppressor.
Without hesitation or concern for human life, Prasittichai shot and killed a security guard, a two-year-old boy who was walking with his mother, and a female employee of the Aurora gold shop. In addition, he shot and injured four others in his rampage. After the bloodshed, Prasittichai robbed the gold shop of 22 one-baht and 11 fifty-satang gold necklaces, with a total worth of 664,470 baht at the time.
Public prosecutors, the Aurora Design Company, and ten affected parties pressed charges against Prasittichai for various crimes, including murder, attempted murder, armed robbery, and other related offenses. The Criminal Court, on August 27, 2020, handed down its judgment, sentencing Prasittichai to death and ordering him to pay damages.
The Appeal Court subsequently upheld the sentencing of the lower court. Undeterred, Prasittichai took his case to the Supreme Court, seeking a reduced penalty. On Wednesday, the highest court in the land came to a decision, maintaining the rulings of both lower courts. It found no reason to grant a reprieve to Prasittichai, given the cold-blooded and heartless nature of the crimes he had committed.
Justice has prevailed in this tragic case, providing a small measure of consolation to the victims and their families. The Supreme Court’s decision to uphold the death sentence sends a clear message that such heinous acts will not go unpunished, and that the justice system will continue to hold accountable those who commit violent crimes against innocent people.
As communities across Thailand come to terms with the outcome of this case, it serves as a powerful reminder of the importance of maintaining a strong and fair legal system that provides protection and justice for all citizens. As we move forward, let us not forget the innocent lives lost in this senseless act of violence, and let us honor their memories by renewing our commitment to building safer, more peaceful communities for all.
