Imagine a place where the gentle lapping of the waves sets a serene backdrop to an enchanting evening tradition. At Sunthorn Phu Municipality, the time-honored festival of Loy Krathong captivates both the heart and spirit, where locals and visitors alike will have the chance to set their decorative floats, known as krathongs, adrift along the coastal embrace under the moonlit sky this coming Monday night.

But here’s the twist in the tale—Sasiphat Jirattikanon, the illustrious education division chief and voice of the municipality, has unveiled that this year’s celebration comes with a maritime masterstroke. Ever the environmental steward, Sasiphat has disclosed that the sea will be graced with these offerings, yet with a cunning plan to ensure that our marine backyard remains as pristine as ever.

Let’s take a rewind to the previous year’s festivities, or shall we say the non-festivities. Despite the absence of an official soiree, the spirit of Loy Krathong was alive and well, with enthusiasts still indulging in the age-old custom of releasing their krathongs upon the waves. Without the watchful eye of the municipality, these ornate vessels danced freely with the current and ventured into the vast blue beyond.

Fast forward to the present day, Sasiphat and the team have woven a smart yet simple solution – floating nets. In an almost Houdini-like fashion, these nets will conjure a boundary that not even the most rebellious krathong can escape. These robust barriers will stand guard against the tides, ensuring every single leaf and flower-crowned float is tenderly collected the following dawn.

Moreover, as the night unfolds, around 10 steadfast security officials will take their posts along the sandy stretches. Their mission? To offer a helping hand to tourists and ensure the beach remains a beacon of safety. Their vigilant eyes will also be on the lookout for any joyful revelers tempted to send their krathongs on an unsupervised oceanic journey.

And while the festivities echo with laughter and the whisper of waves, beneath the surface, a team of scuba divers will stand ready. At daybreak, these underwater guardians will delve into the depths in search of any krathongs that may have stealthily sunk into the aquatic abyss.

It’s no secret that environmental advocates have echoed their concerns far and wide, urging townships to rethink the floating spectacle on our ocean’s watery stage. The sincere plea is to prevent a flotilla of floats from besieging our beloved sea with unwanted debris. Many municipalities are heeding the call, with innovative solutions springing up like the makeshift pool that Patong Municipality in Phuket has crafted, ensuring the tradition lives on while safeguarding the environment.

So there you have it, folks—a tale of tradition interwoven with the threads of environmental consciousness. As the sunset gives way to twilight at Sunthorn Phu Municipality, a new chapter in Loy Krathong’s narrative begins, one where respect for nature and cultural celebrations sail together in perfect harmony.
