UTNP coordinator Himalai Phiewphan has expressed his criticism of Paetongarn’s recent statements, in which she claimed that Pheu Thai, the leading opposition party, would not form a coalition government with past coup leaders. In her clarification, she called attention to her disdain for the two previous coups and her dedication to democracy, implicitly ruling out any partnership with Palang Pracharath PM candidate General Prawit Wongsuwan and UTNP PM candidate General Prayut Chan-o-cha.

Prayut led the 2014 coup against the government of Yingluck Shinawatra, Paetongtarn’s aunt, with Prawit’s support. In 2006, a coup also overthrew Thaksin Shinawatra, Paetongtarn’s father. Himalai, however, believes that taking such a definitive stance prior to the elections is both premature and disrespectful towards fellow parties with a chance to lead the next coalition. He expressed his concern about Paetongtarn using “coup rhetoric” to gain support, urging her and Pheu Thai to focus on their policy plans and how they will implement them, rather than demeaning other parties.

One of Pheu Thai’s key policies has been the introduction of a digital wallet system, in which 10,000 baht will be transferred to every Thai citizen aged 16 or over. Himalai has asked for details on how an estimated 500 billion baht would be raised to fund this policy. Furthermore, he expressed his concern about the possibility of Paetongtarn becoming the next prime minister in case of Pheu Thai’s victory, citing her lack of experience and achievements as potential drawbacks.

In conclusion, the recent statements by Paetongarn have stirred controversy among the Thai political scene, drawing criticism from UTNP coordinator Himalai Phiewphan. The election landscape remains uncertain, as parties and candidates continue to outline their stance and vie for the support of the Thai population. As Election Day approaches, it is vital for each party to provide comprehensive policy proposals and plans to address the concerns of the citizens and contribute to the overall betterment of the country.
