In the midst of a four-day formal tour spanning from October 16th to October 19th, Prime Minister Srettha of Thailand will be making his presence known at the third Belt and Road Forum for International Cooperation taking place in Beijing.
The prestigious international event will be graced by the Thai Prime Minister’s participation, a special offering necessitated by an invitation from President Xi. In consensus with this, an invitation from Chinese Premier Li Qiang led to the scheduling of his ceremonial visit to Chinese soil, as has been disclosed by the Ministry.
Within his visit, an array of eminent Chinese dignitaries will be meeting with the Prime Minister. President Xi and Chairman of the Standing Committee of China’s National People’s Congress Zhao Leji are among those on the itinerary. Furthermore, a meeting with the Prime Minister’s Chinese counterpart, Li Qiang, is scheduled to take place, whereby they will engage in discussions revolving around bilateral ties, as per the information shared by the Thai Foreign Ministry.
The crux of his visit to China orbits the primary objective of enhancing the strategic partnership shared between the countries of Thailand and China. The visit is also designed to bolster cooperation on both fronts in multiple sectors, particularly centred around trade, investment, connectivity, and fostering better people-to-people relationships, as specified by the Ministry.
This official visit to mainland China is slated as the first for PM Srettha since his inception into the office in the latter part of August. His previous travels include a trip to Hong Kong, an administrative region within China, on the 9th of October. After meeting with the chief executive of Hong Kong SAR, John Lee Ka-chiu, they collectively worked towards fortifying trade and investment cooperation. In addition, the Prime Minister made time to converse with esteemed representatives of the private sector about potential investment expansions in Thailand.
Prime Minister Srettha’s delegation also bears the prospects of meeting and engaging with Chinese business élite, the goal being to foster stronger cooperation in trade and investment ventures between the two nations.
A reflection of Thailand’s significant economic policies will be encapsulated in a speech by the Prime Minister. As part of his formal visit to China, Srettha will be accompanied by a delegation group of Thai business titans. These leaders are expected to participate in various activities designed to amplify bilateral trade and investments.
China’s economic influence in Thailand is undeniable, as evidenced by its contributing a substantial 20 percent to Thailand’s total foreign direct investment of 304 billion baht recorded in the initial six months of 2023. According to the Board of Investment, China provided the most substantial slice of FDI, standing as a testament to the prowess of the economic collaborative ties between the two countries.
