Recently, a sting operation by the Department of Special Investigation (DSI) led to a significant bust of illicit meat in Bangkok. Following a rigorous investigation, the DSI managed to implicate at least five miscreant companies in this smuggling racket, ultimately leading to three arrests. A triumvirate colloquially known as Manee, Ran, and Mon, now face the ramifications of their illegal endeavours.
The triumphant announcement made by the DSI’s investigative team pivoted violently from a dramatic chase in Prawet district, where the sleuths successfully captured the devious duo – Manee and Ran. The narrative then shifted to Lat Prao district, where the final piece of the puzzle, Mon, was nabbed, tying up loose ends of this ill-conceived caper.
The executor of this highly intricate and successful crackdown was Witthawat Sukhontharos, the director of the DSI’s intelligence centre. Acting on court-approved warrants issued on October 19, he spearheaded the mission, rightly landing the miscreants behind bars.
The damning charges levelled against the guilty parties include evasion of import tax and illegal importation of goods, particularly pork, in stark violation of the Animal Disease Act. Such flagrant disregard for rules and regulations was bound to culminate in serious consequences for the perpetrators. However, they got inextricably ensnared in their web of deceit while trying to bypass stringent customs rules and regulations.
This dramatic tale unfolds further with an unfortunate incident when an official from the Department of Livestock was shot dead, and another was grievously injured. This unfortunate event occurred during a routine search operation in a frigid storage room in Phetchabun province on October 11. The concerning turn of events led to the subsequent arrest of a disgruntled local entrepreneur who was apprehended after the discovery of a whopping tonne of illicit meat in his establishment’s freezers.
Upon further investigation, the police found that this clandestine storage room had been in operation for years without any legal permit. This revelation sends chills down the spine, as it lays bare the enormous scale and audacity of this meat smuggling operation, which had been functioning with impunity for years.
Detective Major Nathapol Ditsayatham, the man in charge of this smuggling case, threw further light on Saturday, revealing the arrested trio were merely proxies working for a few nefarious businessmen based in Samut Sakhon, Ratchaburi, and Nakhon Pathom. Further investigations suggest that possibly as many as ten firms may be knotted in this sordid affair of illicit meat imports, hinting at a far-reaching transgression that the DSI’s sleuths are now tasked to untangle.
The ingenuity and unflinching determination displayed by the Department of Special Investigation, in this case, reiterate their commitment to enforcing trade regulations effectively. They not only acted swiftly against the offenders but also successfully unmasked a vast network of companies linked with this illegal activity. The repercussions of contravening the Animal Disease Act and violating tax laws are severe, and this incident serves as a stern warning to all who dare.
