Phuket’s 2025 Tourism Boom: Revenue Soars by 223 Billion Baht

Phuket, the jewel of Thailand’s Andaman Sea, has firmly positioned itself as a magnet for travelers from Russia, China, and India in the early months of 2025. The island has not merely been another dot on their travel map; it has become a vibrant tapestry of culture and adventure that contributed a staggering 223 billion baht in revenue, according to the ever-watchful eyes of the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT). This tropical oasis, graced by palm-fringed shores and azure waters, played host to an impressive 5.85 million visitors from January to May, nudging the numbers upward by 3.14% compared to last year.

The spirit of travel seems to have captivated both local and international wanderlust, as noted by Kamolphan Chalermsakulrat, deputy director of TAT Phuket. With 1.59 million Thai tourists embarking on journeys within their own borders, marking a 6.73% increase, the island has seen a delightful symphony of cultures unite in its paradisiacal embrace. Meanwhile, international travelers accounted for a striking 4.26 million arrivals, rising by 1.86%. Collectively, they infused a whopping 223 billion baht (approximately US$6.8 billion) into the local economy, increasing by 5.19% from the same period last year.

The allure of Phuket’s sandy shores didn’t just stop at filling the beaches; it also brought about a flourishing hospitality industry, with average hotel occupancy soaring to an impressive 82% during this time. May was a bustling month in its own right, drawing in 900,000 sun-seekers, including 247,000 Thais and 668,000 enthusiastic foreigners. Despite a slight dip of 8.8% in international arrivals, the island retained its charm by generating 34.77 billion baht (US$1 billion), experiencing a minimal decrease of 2.93% from the previous year.

June, however, surfaced with its own unique charm, as hotels saw a subtle correction in occupancy rates to 62.63%, hosting an enchanting mosaic of travelers over an average of 3.24 nights. The month welcomed 1.71 million visitors, which included 582,555 locals and 1.13 million globe-trotting foreigners, culminating in a fruitful 35 billion baht (US$1 billion) revenue harvest. The top global travelers hailed from India, Russia, and China, along with guests from Australia, Malaysia, Singapore, Saudi Arabia, the United Kingdom, the United States, and South Korea, each adding their own vibrancy to Phuket’s dynamic blend of cultures.

But that’s not all Phuket has been up to. The enchanting island promises not just passive relaxation but lively events as well, with over 7,062 flights in June alone, accommodating more than a million passengers. With tourist numbers zooming at nearly 95% of pre-pandemic levels from 2019’s first five months, Phuket is clearly not just surviving, but thriving. Events such as the SIP & SURF x Beach Break Kamala from July 25-27 are set to enthrall with surf competitions, live music, and experiential workshops at the picturesque Kamala Beach in the Kathu district. Meanwhile, eco-enthusiasts can look forward to the Coral College on July 24 at Ao Chalong Pier, specifically aimed to promote marine conservation in a lively and engaging manner.

The island’s creative landscape is also set to expand during the Asia Link Sketch Walk Phuket event from August 14 to August 17, where 777 artists from 26 countries will be gathering in a united endeavor to sketch Phuket’s iconic vistas. These artworks will later grace the walls of the prestigious Thailand Biennale during the year, showcasing the beautiful kaleidoscope that Phuket truly is.

Looking ahead to the long weekend from July 10 to July 13, Phuket gears up for another surge with an estimated 199,460 visitors ready to cast their economic magic wand, generating a solid 2.89 billion baht (US$88.46 million). This flourishing tourism period is interspersed with continuous waves of news across Thailand, including the ever-buzzing Pattaya and Bangkok, narrating stories as dynamic as the country itself. From vivid cultural tales to the serene canvas of Phuket, the island is a testament to Thailand’s continual evolution as a top-tier travel destination.

I agree! It’s a double-edged sword. More tourism can mean more pollution and environmental damage. We need sustainable practices!

Exactly! It’s crucial for places like Phuket to preserve their ecosystems. Maybe eco-tourism events like Coral College are a step in the right direction.

Tourism boosts local economies though. Without it, many locals might struggle. It’s all about finding balance.

Phuket is thriving, but I’m worried about overcrowding. The island is beautiful, but too many tourists could make it unbearable.

Overcrowding is a real concern. I visited last year and it was packed. Maybe limiting the number of flights could help.

      • Sara L. July 10, 2025

True, but limiting flights might impact those dependent on tourism for their livelihood.

The increase in hotel occupancy is impressive but also concerning. Are there enough regulations to ensure these expansions are done responsibly?

More hotels usually equals more environmental footprint. Hope Phuket’s sustainability plans are solid.

Um, okay, why are people whining about overcrowding? It’s a free world; everyone should be able to visit wherever they want.

Yes, but freedom comes with responsibility. Sustainability should always be a priority over unrestricted travel.

      • EcoTraveler July 10, 2025

Absolutely! Unchecked tourism can destroy the very thing people come to see.
