In what can only be described as a heartbreaking turn of events, a delightful holiday in Phuket came to a tragic end for a 36-year-old Polish tourist. The serene sands of Kamala Beach on May 8 became the backdrop for an unforeseen tragedy when the man embarked on a solo morning swim and was subsequently found lifeless in the water.

According to eyewitness accounts from the beach, lifeguards noticed the man floating face down near the iconic Kamala Shrine around 10:35 a.m. Despite their immediate response, frantically performing CPR both on the beach and during the swift ambulance ride, he was sadly declared dead at Patong Hospital shortly thereafter. It’s moments like these that remind us of the unpredictability of life.

This devastating incident unfolded right in front of Village 3, in the Kamala subdistrict of Kathu district, an area usually buzzing with joyous holiday-goers soaking up the sun. The authorities have chosen to withhold the tourist’s name at present, out of respect for the grieving family who have yet to be notified of their heartbreaking loss.

The chain of events leading to this tragedy began around 8 a.m. when the man decided to take advantage of the tranquil morning waters for a swim. Little did anyone know that this decision would lead to such a sorrowful end. The lifeguards, always vigilant, spotted him at 10:35 a.m., and a rescue mission quickly ensued.

“We received an urgent alert from Kamala lifeguards about a man found unconscious in the ocean,” explained a representative from the Kamala Subdistrict Administrative Organisation’s rescue unit. The response from the Kamala SAO rescue team was swift, coordinating with the Narendorn Command Centre to bring in an Advanced Life Support vehicle as quickly as possible, but unfortunately, it was already too late.

An autopsy confirmed the cause of death as drowning, with no signs of physical injuries or violence discovered. This tragic end seems to have been a pure accident, with hospital staff affirming that no suspicious circumstances surrounded his untimely demise. Friends who accompanied him on this trip shared that while he was in Phuket with companions, he had opted for a solo morning swim—a decision that unexpectedly cut the trip short.

Efforts are underway to assist police in reaching his family to help coordinate the repatriation of his body back to Poland, ensuring that he can be laid to rest with the appropriate rites. Meanwhile, Kamala Police Station has opened a case file and reported no foul play was involved, underlining the sheer suddenness and randomness of this tragic day.

For those who saw the day’s events unfold, including beachgoers and big-hearted rescuers, it’s a sobering reminder of life’s fragility, even in paradise.

I agree, but accidents can happen to anyone, anywhere. Sometimes it’s just bad luck.

      • Anna B May 9, 2025

True, Kadeem. We can only hope that safety measures are in place to minimize such tragedies.

  2. TommyG May 9, 2025

Honestly, I wonder if swimming alone should be discouraged at popular tourist spots. Maybe there should be some rule against it to prevent such tragedies.

    • Susan_89 May 9, 2025

Enforcing such rules might not be practical. People want their freedom, especially on vacation.

      • TommyG May 9, 2025

Freedom is important, but safety should come first. Perhaps a balance can be struck somehow.

Does anyone know if rip currents are a common issue at Kamala Beach? Understanding the risks might help future tourists.

    • Linda C May 9, 2025

I’ve been there before and rip currents can indeed be a problem. Maybe there needs to be better signage about potential dangers.

Things like these make me question why lifeguards weren’t able to see him sooner. Modern tech could help keep everyone safer.

    • TonyTG May 9, 2025

Technology does play a big role in safety now. Drones could assist in monitoring large areas like beaches.

      • JustJoe May 9, 2025

That’s an interesting idea, Tony. It could save lives if implemented effectively.

I’ve been to Kamala Beach several times, and let’s not sensationalize. It remains a beautiful and generally safe place.

Agreed, but even beautiful places are not immune to accidents.

Why didn’t they have quicker access to medical help? Time is crucial in these situations.
