Yesterday morning, the serene ambiance of Sangkhla Buri district was abruptly interrupted by an earth tremor which registered a magnitude of 4 on the Richter scale. The quake, whose epicenter was located near the quiet hamlet of tambon Nong Lu, sent shivers down the spine of Kanchanaburi, with ripples of seismic activity being felt across the western province. This sudden shake and tremble prompted swift action from local authorities, who sprung into action to assess the safety of public buildings and infrastructure.
According to the esteemed head of the Thai Meteorological Department, Kanrawee Sitthicheewapak, the tremor originated from approximately six kilometers beneath the earth’s surface. It was first detected in the wee hours of the morning, precisely at 03:07 am. The Earthquake Observation Division, a team of erudite seismologists versed in tectonic activities, attributed the quake to movements along the notable Three Pagodas Fault.
Interestingly, with the advent of technology and social media, many residents of Sangkhla Buri had a platform to share their experiences of the jolt. We found a plethora of Facebook posts from locals claiming to have been jostled awake by the quake’s furious shake. One instance that perfectly captured the surprise and shock of the community was shared by Nataya Noomwatana, a merchandise vendor in the local market. With a disbelieving shake of the head, she narrated how she was all set up for the day when sounds erupted from the rooftop over her head and the ground beneath her feet. The quake had sown the seeds of fear in the market vendors who had immediately taken refuge in safe corners.
It is worth noting that this is not the first time residents of Sangkhla Buri have experienced such seismic affairs. Two significant aftershocks have been recorded in the past few years, a quake of 4.8 magnitude on the Richter scale on July 14th, 2015, and another measuring 4.5 on August 20th, 2015. Always keen on ensuring the safety and wellbeing of the citizens, the proactive governor of Kanchanaburi, Tossapol Chaikomin, ordered Sangkhla Buri’s district chief Sutthiporn Siwawetpikul, to investigate and evaluate all potential building damages.
While the event may seem unsettling, it also showcases the efficiency with which the local authorities react to unforeseen circumstances, ensuring the safety and wellbeing of public citizens. Through swift response times and efficient procedural action, these tremors are another testament to the strength and resilience of the Sangkhla Buri district.
