In a laudable testament to progress and innovation, the Eastern Economic Corridor of Innovation (EECi), under the directive of Thailand’s Prime Minister, Prayut Chan-o-cha, has made substantial headway in a span of five years. According to PM Prayut, this achievement mirrors the surge in innovation and research endeavours within the same timeframe.
In a recent tour to closely inspect the proceedings of the EECi, PM Prayut was joined by Interior Minister Anupong Paojinda, Thanakorn Wangboonkongchana, the Minister of the Prime Minister’s Office, and Labour Minister, Suchart Chomklin. This hands-on inspection led them across the expanse of the Wangchan Valley, situated in Rayong’s Wang Chan district.
The EECi, a project conceived under the Eastern Economic Corridor (EEC) umbrella, aspires to create an environment that fosters innovative ideas. These groundbreaking concepts are envisioned to infuse a new streak of vitality into ten industries nominated at a national level.
Under the purview of the EECi is the Wangchan Valley. Nestled within this biodiverse region are strategic establishments like the Intelligent Operation Centre (IOC), Innovative Agriculture Smart Greenhouse, and Smart Manufacturing Centre (SMC). Moreover, the Vidyasirimedhi Institute of Science and Technology (VISTEC) also finds its home within this valley.
Staying synchronised with Thailand’s celebration of Industry 4.0, the SMC and the IOC broadened their vistas to engage a broader group including entrepreneurs, developers, researchers, and students. The EECi’s development centres have enjoyed the special attention of the Prime Minister, as reported by the Bangkok Post.
Upon inspecting the VISTEC, the eco-conscious Prime Minister cast a spotlight on the institution’s determined effort towards achieving net zero carbon emissions. Aligning with the Thai government’s ambitious objective to slash carbon emissions by a phenomenal 20%, it has charted a novel route to have net zero emissions by 2065-2070.
A representative from the Government House announced that the Prime Minister has expressed appreciation for the EECi’s pivotal role in fostering domestic growth and research cultivation. The Prime Minister anticipates that the galaxy of researchers groomed by the EECi will continue to contribute to these objectives in the times to come.
The sound infrastructural framework of the EECi has also come under the Prime Minister’s approval, with expectations for maintaining such high standards being expressed.
Impressed with the EECi’s first five years, Prayut stated, “I am pleased with the EECi’s progress and its commitment to environmental sustainability”, and expressed optimism for the future.
He also highlighted the importance of EECi’s innovations trickling into various sectors on a global scale and advocated for the cultivation of 158 crop species approved recently.
The PM’s visit to Rayong was his first since the political split from United Thai Nation (UTN) Party. He refrained from discussing this, maintaining the focus of the trip was solely on the progress and not political developments.
