On April 21, 1782, King Rama I, the inaugural sovereign of the Chakri dynasty, founded the Rattanakosin Kingdom and shifted the capital from Thonburi to Bangkok. To commemorate the establishment of the city, a shrine and city pillar, or lak muang, was erected in the present-day Phra Nakhon district.

In a recent ceremony, Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-Cha paid tribute to the city pillar, accompanied by acting Deputy Defence Minister General Chaichan Changmongkol and Defence Permanent Secretary General Sanitchanok Sangkhachan. The Prime Minister also paid homage to numerous sacred items surrounding the shrine, including a revered Buddha statue.

The religious proceedings were led by nine monks, with Somdet Phra Maha Weerawong, secretary of the Supreme Patriarch, at the helm. Following the ceremony, Prayut informed the media of his wish for a peaceful Thailand when inquired about his solemn demeanor during the event.

The Prime Minister attributed his somber appearance to the sweltering heat and denied any links to the unexpected encounter with whistleblower Chuwit Kamolvisit the previous day during his election campaign in Chinatown.

Chuwit Kamolvisit, a former soapy massage magnate and politician, appeared on Yaowarat Road to oppose cannabis legalization and confront Prayut. Caught off guard, the Prime Minister was eating noodles but hastily retreated once he was interrupted by Chuwit.

Throughout its rich history, the city of Bangkok has stood tall and proud, with its unique city pillar and shrine symbolizing the strength and resilience of the Rattanakosin Kingdom. As the bustling capital continues to thrive, its inhabitants and leaders, such as Prime Minister Prayut, seek to preserve a peaceful environment and pay homage to the city’s storied past through ceremonies and rituals that celebrate Bangkok’s founding and the significance of its sacred city pillar.

In a world of rapid change and progress, Bangkok serves as a shining example of how a city can embrace modernity while remaining firmly rooted in its traditional customs and values. By continuing to honor and respect the city pillar, the leaders and citizens of Bangkok can show their commitment to maintaining harmony and stability in both present and future generations.

Though unexpected occurrences may arise – such as political protests or confrontations – it is essential for leaders like Prayut to focus on their primary goals, like fostering peace, security, and prosperity within their respective regions. By doing so, they can ensure they stay true to their values and do not let external factors sway them from their intended path.

As Bangkok celebrates its historic founding, citizens and visitors alike can appreciate the city’s unique blend of tradition and progress, with relics like the city pillar reminding them of the rich history that has shaped this vibrant, bustling metropolis.
