In a captivating turn of events, police in Isaan, Udon Thani province, are on a hunt for a local man alleged to have stolen two winning lottery tickets valued at 40,000 baht (approximately $1,167). Our tale revolves around the misfortune of a 64-year-old man named Klai, who claims that his friend, a 50-year-old man known locally as Kwan, is the culprit.
The story began to unravel at the humble locale of Taluk Doo Police Station, where Klai lodged a formal complaint against Kwan. He claimed that Kwan had made off with his two winning tickets in a sinister act of deceit. As Klai told the police, he purchased four lottery tickets and was naive enough to trust his friend to check the results on his behalf on October 16th.
However, things took a turn when Kwan started acting suspiciously while checking the last pair of tickets. Despite the odd behavior, Klai handed the tickets over to Kwan who summarily declared they were of no value. Kwan even went as far as to declare that he’d dispose of the tickets, as they were nothing but worthless pieces of paper. A trusting Klai didn’t think much of his friend’s antics, a decision he would soon come to regret.
Fate shone a beacon of light on Klai’s fortune when he discovered he had won the fifth lottery prize, a whopping 40,000 baht! He rushed to reclaim his rightfully won lottery tickets from Kwan, only to find that Kwan had disappeared, leaving no trace behind.
Kwan, a known figure in the community who runs an amulet shop within the vicinity of the local temple, hadn’t opened his business since the incident. Upon inquiry, a local monk explained to the reporters that Kwan’s shop had been in operation for five years. The monk’s revelation added more intrigue to this unfolding tale of deceit.
In response to the pressure from the community and media, Kwan responded by posting a reply on Facebook. “I am not running away. The allegations leveled against me are not completely accurate,” he claimed, adding, “I shall meet the police, but let me gather the money first”. Despite claiming his innocence and promising to return some money to Klai, Kwan failed to acknowledge his act of stealing the tickets in his messages.
According to the latest report by Channel 7 on October 18th, Kwan had yet to surrender to the authorities. As the intriguing case proceeds, the officer has issued a summons against Kwan. If Kwan remains elusive, an arrest warrant will be the next course of action. For more stimulating stories from Thaiger, follow our new Facebook page HERE.
