Thailand Weather Alert: Heavy Rains Expected Across 40 Provinces – June 2025

As June 29th unfolds, Thailand is gearing up for a symphony of raindrops with heavy showers predicted across 40 provinces, including the bustling capital, Bangkok. Picture this: raindrops serenading 60% of the urban landscape while the rest scurries for umbrellas and rain boots. It’s advised that locals stay on their toes with the threat of accumulated rainfall, not to mention the companion of moderate sea waves cruising into the scene.

The weather spectacle is courtesy of the Thai Meteorological Department (TMD), which paints a vivid picture of impending thunderstorms and sporadic heavy showers in the northern and upper northeastern regions. Meanwhile, the rainfall is expected to take a step back in the lower northeastern, central, and eastern regions, although pockets of heavy downpour might still surprise a few unguarded picnickers. And let’s not forget Southern Thailand, where thunderstorms will be making a scattered appearance, as if performing an impromptu dance.

What wizardry in the skies is causing such a spectacle, you ask? It’s the moderate southwest monsoon waving over the Andaman Sea, Thailand, and the Gulf of Thailand, backed by a low-pressure act over northern Vietnam. The sea waves in both the Andaman Sea and the Gulf of Thailand are expected to play at moderate volumes, with the upper Andaman Sea hosting waves snugly between 1 and 2 meters. Meanwhile, the waves in the lower Andaman Sea and upper Gulf coast cuddle around a 1-meter mark. Watch out though, thunderstorms might just turn the volume up, sending waves soaring beyond 2 meters – a cautionary note for seafarers to navigate with care and steer clear of tempestuous waters.

Focusing on the northern region – a beloved realm where thunderstorms are set to cover 60% of the territory. Expect heavens to weep heavily in spots like Mae Hong Son, Chiang Mai, and Chiang Rai among others. The air whispers will range between a cool 23 to 25°C at night and a fairly warm 31 to 34°C during the day, escorted by southwest winds fluttering at 10 to 20 kilometers per hour. Over in the northeastern backyard, a similarly hefty 60% thunderstorm coverage might sprinkle a song and dance of heavy rain over places such as Loei, Nong Khai, and Udon Thani. The temperature here will echo the northern tunes, as wind patterns drum a familiar beat.

Zooming into central Thailand, brace for thunderstruck skies in 60% of the area, with heartier rain in Uthai Thani, Saraburi, and Kanchanaburi. Night invites a blanket of 24 to 25°C, keeping you cozy as Daytime brews up a cauldron of 31 to 35°C. To the east, under the seemingly normal swipe of thunderstorms across 60% of the atmosphere, torrents could encore over Nakhon Nayok, Prachin Buri, and Rayong. Expect temperatures to oscillate between a gentle 23 to 25°C by night to a more vigorous 31 to 34°C by day, as the southwest winds serenade at 15 to 30 kilometers per hour. Sea waves play a relatively safe game at about 1 meter, yet keep an eye on stormy drummers that could amplify them to over 2 meters.

Joining the narrative, Southern Thailand’s east coast embarks on a journey through thunderstorms covering 30% of the horizon, mostly gracing Phetchaburi, Chumphon, and Surat Thani with their presence. The mercury straddles between 23 and 26°C at night, leaping to 31 to 36°C as the sun comes to play. A glance towards the west coast reveals a similar 30% dance of thunderstorms, mainly waltzing through Ranong, Phang Nga, and the ever-charming Phuket. Here, temperatures will script a melodious 23 to 27°C at night, soaring to 32 to 36°C during daylight. The upper coast’s winds will waltz between 15 to 35 kilometers per hour, while their lower counterparts manage a slightly slower tempo at 15 to 30 kilometers per hour.

In Bangkok, where the city never sleeps, thunderstorms are set to embrace 60% of its urban jungle. The whispers of the night will flow in at 25 to 26°C, cranking up the heat to 32 to 35°C as day breaks, accompanied by southwest winds gently nudging at 10 to 20 kilometers per hour.

But it does make a point that we’re seeing more extreme weather lately.

Still unconvinced. We need more concrete evidence, not just panic.

Prepare for the worst and hope for the best, I guess. We can’t afford to risk it.
