The agonizing 48-day ordeal following the catastrophic collapse of the new State Audit Office (SAO) building in Bangkok’s bustling Chatuchak District drew to a poignant close on Tuesday, May 13. To pay homage to the lives tragically lost in the disaster, a grand Buddhist merit-making and memorial ceremony was thoughtfully organized.

According to the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA), the catastrophic incident involved a staggering total of 109 individuals. Among them, 89 souls were tragically confirmed as deceased, nine were left injured, four miraculously escaped unscathed, while seven unfortunate individuals are still in the shadows of forensic identification, their fates left hanging in the balance.

The harrowing collapse unfolded on March 28, when the aspiring edifice on Kamphaeng Phet 2 Road, a project worth a hefty 2.136 billion baht, succumbed to the formidable fury of Mother Nature. A mammoth 8.2-magnitude earthquake, born from the restless Sagaing Fault in Myanmar, unleashed its wrath, sending shockwaves rippling through the ground and birthing devastating aftershocks that rippled across numerous provinces, including the bustling heart of Bangkok.

Throughout this nail-biting 48-day saga, a mosaic of rescue teams converged from various corners, each member fueled by an unyielding spirit, to brave the perilous conditions and fulfill their solemn mission to retrieve those ensnared beneath the unforgiving debris. Their unwavering dedication and sleepless efforts culminated in the recovery of all victims, bringing both relief and solemnity to many.

As dawn broke at precisely 7:00 a.m. on Tuesday, the BMA, together with dedicated community partners and devout Buddhist practitioners, orchestrated a merit-making ceremony bathed in reverence and respect. This solemn event witnessed 109 monks gathering to bestow blessings onto the souls of the departed. It served not only to honor the victims but also to express a heartfelt gratitude to the relentless rescue teams and provided solace and emotional refuge for the grieving families.

Today signaled the official conclusion of the exhaustive search and rescue operation, with the site ceremoniously transitioning into the stewardship of appropriate authorities. In a touching denouement, government officials, rescue personnel, and attendees stood united in a moment of profound silence, ending with the laying of flowers as part of a final, somber homage to the departed victims.

The collapse of the SAO building stands as a chilling reminder of a national calamity that scarred many hearts and homes. It starkly underscores the dire need for vigilant preparedness in the ever-looming shadow of nature’s unpredictability. As the dust settles, the memory of this tragedy persists as a searing testament to resilience and the spirit of unity in the face of overwhelming adversity.

I agree, Michael. We need stricter regulations to ensure buildings can withstand such disasters. It’s preventable!

But nature is unpredictable. Can we really blame regulations when a 8.2-magnitude earthquake strikes?

      • Michael B May 13, 2025

That’s true, Riley, nature can be unpredictable but that shouldn’t stop us from preparing for worst-case scenarios.

Heartbreaking! But why wasn’t this building retrofitted to handle earthquakes from the start?

    • TommyLee May 13, 2025

It’s all about money. They probably wanted to save on costs. Human lives should be the priority though!
