On a serene Sunday in the heart of Phetchabun’s Lom Sak district, the tranquility was shattered by a heart-wrenching discovery. Sunthorn Kongwarakom and his team of wildlife officials retrieved the lifeless body of a male serow, a majestic creature tragically brought down by gunfire. The distressing incident occurred in a rugged, mountainous region, specifically near a partially excavated quarry in tambon Bung Nam Tao.

Chanyaphak Thanachatakkarakun, the vigilant chief of Phupha Daeng Wildlife Sanctuary, recounted the grim details. A worker from the Silarat Lom Sak stone crushing plant had reported hearing sharp gunshots echoing across the mountaintop, followed by the harrowing sight of the serow plummeting into a pit below. Delving into the pit, officials were met with a grievous sight—a mature male serow, its noble neck marred by seven shotgun wounds.

The suspects behind this heinous act remain at large, with no immediate evidence found at the scene to point to the responsible party. This tragic event unfolded outside the bounds of Khao Kheo National Park, prompting the Lom Sak police station to launch an intensive investigation aimed at tracking down the culprit. The slain serow was not just any animal but one of Thailand’s 15 protected species, safeguarded under the stringent Wildlife Conservation and Protection Act of 2019.

In a parallel distressing narrative, Buri Ram province mourns the loss of another majestic animal. Over in the Non Dindaeng district, near the threshold of the verdant Dong Yai National Reserved Forest, a tiger’s tale took a sorrowful turn. This tiger, having ventured into human territory and consuming cattle belonging to the local villagers, suffered a dire fate.

The saga began on Friday when the tiger’s injuries were first reported. Authorities, in collaboration with seasoned local veterinarians, crafted a meticulous plan to rescue the ailing big cat. However, before the plan could come to fruition, the tiger was discovered in a severely weakened state—its breaths shallow, its frame skeletal. Despite the best efforts to save it, the regal animal succumbed to its condition, slipping away from the land it once roamed freely.

An initial examination of the tiger’s remains revealed a puzzling lack of external injuries. To dispel the uncertainty surrounding its death, a detailed autopsy will be conducted, aiming to uncover the true cause and bring clarity to its untimely demise.

Both incidents serve as stark reminders of the delicate balance between wildlife and human encroachment. These tragic events highlight the urgent need for enhanced protection measures and stricter enforcement of wildlife conservation laws. As investigations proceed, the hope remains that these stories will not just be tales of loss but catalysts for change, spurring efforts to harmonize the coexistence of humans and the irreplaceable creatures of the wild.
