In an anticipation-filled ambiance, locals congregated, harboring hopes of cashing in on good fortune traced back to an extra-ordinary, mysterious eel-like creature discovered by a 53-year-old Mukdahan local, Somchai. Somchai introduced the enigmatic fish to the villagers, putting the approximately 75 cm long creature with its entrancing white body shimmering with an elaborate matrix of veins and gleaming black eyes on display in a rustic bamboo cage.
Reflecting on his serendipitous encounter with the fish, Somchai reveals that he crossed paths with the puzzling creature two months prior while on a nocturnal fishing excursion in a nearby rivulet. Initially, caught off guard by the creature’s resemblance to a snake, he was pleasantly surprised to realize he had stumbled upon an albino eel-like fish. Choosing to hold on to the uncommon entity, spurred on by a deeply-rooted belief that crossing paths with such an elusive creature could usher in a wave of good fortune. Guided by this belief, and backed up by his neighbors and spouse, he constructed five sacred altars adorned with incense and candles to channel this good fortune, reported KhaoSod.
With the upcoming lottery draw at the back of his mind, Somchai keenly studied the fish for clues in anticipation of a big hit. It wasn’t long before his scrutinizing gaze unearthed the numbers 05 – 80 etched on the eel’s body, promptly deciding to stake those in a bid to strike it big in the forthcoming lottery draw. His hope is underlined by recent winnings by his wife who, since the arrival of the fish, has recorded four lottery wins.
Despite witnessing a surge in offers to buy the fish, he has been steadfast in his refusal to part with it. Somchai places heavy belief in its continued attraction of luck and prosperity to his family. Quoted saying “Previously, there were reports of a gold-coloured eel-like fish, but I have never seen a white one like the one I caught. I want to keep it at home as a symbol of prosperity for my family.”
