According to a story in Nation Thailand, spokeswoman Thanakorn Wangboonkongchana claims that the government’s decision to cancel Test & Go has resurrected the tourism business, with over 20,000 international visits per day today. The now-defunct Test & Go program required international visitors to undergo a PCR test upon arrival and stay in quarantine at a pre-arranged accommodation until their results were negative.
If this trend continues, Thanakorn estimates that Thailand will receive roughly 500,000 visitors per month during the low season of May to September, with the majority coming from the short-haul sector. This number is likely to quadruple during the peak season, which runs from October through December, as travelers from Europe and the United States avoid the cold. The Thai administration has denied that it is neglecting the country’s tourism crisis, as claimed by the opposition. He goes on to say that once Chinese tourists resume travel, the number of foreign visitors to Thailand should rise to roughly 50% of pre-pandemic levels. Even though the entrance policy has been scrapped, foreign immigrants must still register through the Thailand Pass system and provide proof of Covid-19 vaccination or a negative PCR test within 72 hours of leaving their home country, according to Thanakorn. A US$10,000 Covid-19 insurance coverage requirement remains in place. According to this, Thailand’s tourism revenue should be over 1.5 trillion baht this year. The Centre for Covid-19 Situation Administration reportedly decided to stop registering returning Thai people for Thailand Passes as of June 1. It remains, however, a requirement for foreign nationals visiting the kingdom. Thanakorn has also confirmed that starting next month, all border checkpoints will reopen.
Thai government anticipates 1 million tourists every month by the end of the year.
