Authorities and rescue workers in Phuket have been investigating a chilling incident involving a Russian man who was shot and injured inside his car in Thalang district by an armed man from Kazakhstan, stirring up a sense of unease in the popular beach town. The scene unfolded near a bustling café in the Laguna Phuket business area on Wednesday, just a short distance from the Choeng Thale police station.
An air of urgency ensued on Thursday morning when the Kazakh suspect, identified as Artur Legay, was detained by immigration police at Phuket International Airport. Reports indicate that Legay had checked in and stayed at a hotel in tambon Choeng Thale. Details of the case are still emerging, with further investigation in progress to establish motives and connection between the two men.
It was around 11:45 am on Wednesday when the Phuket 191 emergency response center received word of a gravely injured foreign man in a parked car by a busy café in the Laguna Phuket area. Local police officers and emergency units hurried to the site of the attack to assess the situation.
Eyewitness accounts and security camera footage revealed a chilling sequence of events that took place just moments earlier. As the car, occupied by the 44-year-old Russian national identified as Dmitry Aleynikov, parked outside the establishment, a masked man who had arrived on a Honda PCX motorcycle approached the vehicle. The assailant pulled out a handgun and fired four shots at Aleynikov through the car’s windscreen before fleeing the scene on his motorcycle.
Aleynikov helplessly sustained gunshot wounds to his chest, right armpit, and left arm. Emergency rescuers swiftly worked to extract the unconscious and bleeding man from the vehicle. He was hurriedly transported to Thalang Hospital for immediate medical attention.
As the police delved deeper into the unprecedented attack in Phuket, they ultimately zeroed in on the suspected shooter, leading to his arrest.
