Exciting news for commuters in Thailand! The Transport Ministry is all set to propose a groundbreaking change to the cabinet come Monday. This proposal, set against the backdrop of the Thai government’s policies, will directly affect travel costs on the Mass Rapid Transit Authority (MRTA) lines. If the plan sails through, travelers will experience an immediate reduction in fare. This policy is pinned to shape journeys on the Purple Line stretching from Bang Sue to Klong Bang Phai and the Red Line extending from Bang Sue to Rangsit, not to mention the section from Bang Sue to Taling Chan.
Transport Minister Suriya Juangroongruangkit has reassured the public that relevant agencies were thoroughly consulted regarding the 20 baht fare policy. He also confirmed that the necessary equipment to facilitate these changes has been installed on both MRT lines. In the event that the proposal secures approval on Monday, travelers should anticipate an immediate effect on fares by the afternoon. This milestone will be a win for travelers who use both BTS lines, as the fare collection systems can effectively support the reduction of the maximum fare to 20 baht regardless of the extent of the journey.
The amicable minister went on to state that while software updates will be needed to make the transition smooth for travelers moving between the MRT lines, this process is expected to be concluded by November. He said, “Both BTS lines currently have fare collection systems that can support reducing the maximum fare to 20 baht for the entire trip. They can, therefore, permit the immediate implementation of fare adjustments once approved.”
For passengers traveling on both the MRT lines and within the 20 baht maximum fare range, they can expect to pay only a maximum of 20 baht. This provision extends to those moving within the same system or transferring between the Purple and Red lines. There’s a catch, though! For you to enjoy this, payments must be processed exclusively through debit or credit cards (EMV cards).
If you are transferring between the Purple and Red lines, prepare for a 30-minute switch at the Bang Son station. Thankfully, one ticket will cover both trips. In addition to these wonderful changes, the MRT has fixed the maximum fare for the MRT Purple Line at a high of 20 baht (a significant fall from the previous 42 baht) throughout the service hours (5.30am to midnight). It’s indeed a season of massive discounts, with kids and seniors getting a 50% rate slash and students enjoying a 10% discount.
