Chumphon Road Rage Erupts: Songthaew Driver Chanarong’s Gunfire Shocks City

In a steamy showdown reminiscent of an action thriller, a songthaew driver in Chumphon unleashed chaos and bullets during a heated road rage dispute. The incident unfolded in broad daylight, leaving onlookers in disbelief as two men were caught in the crossfire of what began as an everyday traffic altercation. This cinematic clash took place at around 3 PM on July 17, just a stone’s throw away from the ever-bustling Chumphon City Hall, right at the infamous Clock Tower Intersection.

The stage for this dramatic series of events was set when a fiery red public taxi pickup, driven by none other than the hotheaded Chanarong, brazenly cut in front of a pristine white Toyota Fortuner. The Fortuner’s driver, Suriya, did what any righteous driver would do: he honked. Little did he know, this simple act of frustration would ignite a spiral of chaos. The pickup instantly screeched to a halt, triggering a minor fender bender and setting the scene for an explosive street war.

Sitting in the back seat with her baby granddaughter, Kanyaphat Ratipatchasiri vividly recalls the harrowing moment. “The pickup came out of nowhere, then slammed the brakes like it was out of a movie scene. We barely knew what hit us when the driver started yelling, and all hell broke loose right in the middle of the street,” recounted Kanyaphat, a witness to this unfolding drama.

Suriya, a 31-year-old caught up in this adrenaline-fueled skirmish, stepped out, ready to reason with the irate pickup driver. The 38-year-old Chanarong, however, had different plans. The verbal sparring quickly devolved into a physical brawl as punches flew through the air, drawing in a gathered crowd of eager spectators. Amidst the melee, Chanarong decided to up the ante, whipping out a .22-calibre handgun in an audacious twist worthy of an action movie.

The atmosphere turned tense as the sound of gunfire pierced the humid air. Suriya took a bullet to his left arm, while another brave soul, 49-year-old Kriangsak, narrowly dodged serious injury as he rushed to help. Despite the chaos, and with quick thinking, Kriangsak managed to capture a snapshot of the offending vehicle’s yellow taxi plate before Chanarong made his hasty retreat in the pickup. The secure photo was promptly transmitted to local law enforcement.

Police, utilizing sharp detective skills and the much-needed aid of technology, rapidly traced the suspect’s vehicle. The road led them to a local songthaew route running between Chumphon Fishing Pier and Pak Nam Market. With eyes glued to CCTV footage, officers were led to a hideaway in Hat Sai Ri, where Chanarong was discovered at a friend’s house, his notable pickup parked conspicuously nearby. Inside, they unearthed the handgun, three bullets missing from its chamber.

Once in police custody, Chanarong spun a tale of self-defence. “I didn’t know who he was. One moment I’m driving, the next I’m being honked at. I brake, and suddenly they’re at me like they’re auditioning for a fight club,” he explained. His story continued as he claimed to have been defending his family inside the vehicle when he fired off a warning shot, followed by two more towards his alleged aggressors’ legs. The police remained sceptical of this narrative of fear-turned-fury.

Chanarong now faces a slew of looming charges, including attempted murder, possession and use of an unlicensed firearm, and reckless discharge of a firearm in public areas. Meanwhile, Suriya was whisked away to Chumphon Khet Udomsak Hospital, where he is reported to be in stable condition, recovering from his dramatic ordeal.

This brazen incident, transpiring mere meters away from a child, has rekindled conversations about the prevalence of firearm-related violence and the alarming rise of street justice on Thailand’s bustling roads. One officer, capturing the essence of the entire saga, stated, “It was just a horn, yet it led to gunfire.”

This incident is outrageous! Road rage is never an excuse to use a gun, especially not in broad daylight.

Completely agree. It’s terrifying to think that a minor traffic dispute can escalate to gunfire.

But we don’t know the full story. Maybe Chanarong was genuinely scared for his life.

Even if he was scared, resorting to a weapon is unacceptable. There are better ways to handle these situations.

Why do people think they need to carry guns with them all the time? It’s dangerous and unnecessary!

I wonder if Suriya and Chanarong had a history. Seems too intense for a one-time altercation.

I just get mad when I die in a game, but I’d never think of pulling a gun. People are wild.

You make a fair point. We all need to find healthier outlets for aggression.

As a physician, I see too many people admitted for gunshot wounds. We need stricter gun control.

A warning shot, sure. But firing multiple shots in a public space? That’s reckless.

Right, one might argue he was scared, but he endangered others.

As someone planning to visit Thailand, stories like these make me nervous about road safety.
