Ah, Hat Yai! The jewel of Thailand’s south, beckoning travelers with its vibrant markets and the promise of unforgettable experiences. And guess what? The ever-reliable Tourism Authority of Thailand has let it slip that the city is about to cash in a whopping 760 million baht during the New Year festivities. Yes, you heard it right—Hat Yai is set to dazzle more than it did last year, from December 30 to the stroke of midnight welcoming January 1. How thrilling is that?

Nongyao Jirundon, the esteemed director of the TAT’s Hat Yai office, could hardly contain her excitement as she detailed the influx of tourists. The city has been abuzz since the week kicked off, brimming with anticipation and, most notably, welcoming a delightful surge of visitors from neighboring Malaysia, who’ve been flocking in since Christmas. It appears Santa decided to give tourism a little nudge this year!

Breathless with anticipation, Ms. Nongyao cites the lifting of the pesky requirement to fill out those TM 6 forms at the Sadao checkpoint—a move as welcomed as a cool breeze on a scorching Thai day—as well as a plethora of tourism campaigns that have lit up December like fireworks. Front and center is the Amazing Countdown Songkhla Festival 2024, a cornucopia of joy running from December 27 to 31, and let’s not forget the pièce de résistance, the Hat Yai Countdown to 2024 on New Year’s Eve. So hold onto your party hats!

Local tour whisperer, Witthaya Sae Lim, dropping knowledge with the authority only a seasoned guide can muster, shared glowing reports from hoteliers who couldn’t be more chuffed about their business prospects. It’s all-systems-go with hotel bookings going through the roof! And the party doesn’t stop when the New Year’s confetti settles—oh no! With the Chinese Lunar New Year and school semester breaks on the radar, Hat Yai’s hospitality scene is just getting started. Mr. Witthaya assures us, hoteliers are geared up for a constant stream of guests right up until Songkran in April.

Thai citizens and intrepid globetrotters from Malaysia are leading the charge, with Singaporeans and Indonesians not far behind, all converging on this hub of culture and excitement. Hat Yai, sweet Hat Yai, where the world comes to play, celebrate, and surrender to the infectious rhythm of southern Thailand. To visit is to fall in love, and to fall in love is to return, time and time again.
