King Maha Vajiralongkorn’s Solemn Farewell to Fallen Soldier PFC Pakom Suden

In a solemn affair that will forever be etched in the hearts of those who attended, His Majesty King Maha Vajiralongkorn Phra Vajiraklaochaoyuhua extended a moving farewell to Private First Class (PFC) Pakom Suden. This young and brave soul from Phuket, whose untimely demise came during a security patrol in Thailand’s turbulent Deep South, was honored in a special ceremony held on June 26 at 1:30 PM. The venue was the Muslim cemetery in Baan Bang Malao, Sakhu, where a gathering of officials, soldiers, police officers, Islamic religious leaders, and PFC Pakom’s family came together in a unified show of respect.

Presiding over the ceremony were Phuket Governor Sophon Suwannarat and Major General Apinan Chaemchaeng, Commander of the 5th Infantry Division. The proceedings commenced with the Imam of the local community delivering a prayer of Al-Fatihah, an invocation that echoed with a sense of reverence through the assembly. This was followed by a heartfelt speech from a family representative, expressing gratitude amidst their profound grief.

In this atmosphere of sorrow mixed with immense pride, His Majesty’s designated representative paid tribute to the valiant sacrifice of PFC Pakom. As a gesture that embodies the nation’s gratitude, the family was presented with the national flag, Bang Rajan medals for bravery, and a royal certificate, symbolizing the highest honors reserved for those who lay their lives on the line for peace.

At just 22, PFC Pakom was a machine gunner with the 3rd Rifle Platoon, 1st Infantry Company, Special Operations Unit. His service was abruptly cut short on June 17 during a patrol in Baan Wang Hin, Bannang Sata district, Yala province, when a sniper’s bullet claimed his life. Despite swift attempts to save him, he succumbed to his injuries. That same evening, his body was flown back to Phuket, welcomed with full military honors by the 1st Battalion, 15th Infantry Regiment. That night, his remains were solemnly taken to the Darul Abidin Mosque in Bang Malao for burial rites observed the next day.

Rendering their final goodbyes were senior military commanders, local officials, and a cascade of community members who all gathered in solidarity. These included Thalang District Chief Siwat Rawangkun, Sakhu Mayor Trin Panyawai, and high-ranking police officers, all paying their respects to this fallen hero whose story touched hearts far and wide, as reported by The Phuket News.

Further demonstrating royal compassion, on June 19, King Vajiralongkorn and Queen Suthida had a heartfelt gesture delivered in the form of a royal gift basket to PFC Pakom’s family via Phuket Vice Governor Suwit Phansengiam. This personal condolence sought to comfort during the family’s time of mourning and loss. In a display of high honor, royal burial soil was bestowed upon the young soldier, a privilege symbolizing high esteem conferred upon those who have paid the ultimate price in defense of national harmony and security.

The outpouring of royal gestures brought a sense of solace to PFC Pakom’s kin and community, who echoed gratitude for the recognition of their son’s bravery and the sustained support through these trying times. To them, the royal accolades were more than mere ceremonies; they were a beacon of solace during a deeply challenging period.

This is such a tragic story. It’s heartwarming to see the king give such a respectful farewell to a soldier.

    • historybuff45 June 27, 2025

Agreed, but let’s not forget that the royal family often uses these events for political gain.

      • Emily D June 27, 2025

That’s a cynical view. It could simply be an act of genuine compassion.

      • skeptic57 June 27, 2025

Emily, historybuff45 has a point. Royals have always been involved in politics even if indirectly. But yes, it could also be genuine.

The ceremony sounds so dignified. It’s important to honor those who sacrifice everything for their country.

Absolutely! But it’s also worth questioning why these sacrifices are still necessary in this day and age.

Because unfortunately, conflicts are an inevitable part of human societies.

It’s nice to see the royals involved, but it doesn’t bring back their loved one.

True, Andrew. But gestures like these can provide emotional support during such difficult times.

I visited Phuket recently. It’s a beautiful place but hearing about such tragedies is heartbreaking. There’s more beneath the surface.

This kind of news shows the ugly side of what appears to be a paradise on the surface. Be aware of the issues if you’re visiting.

I think the royal family’s involvement is just for show.

    • Candace June 27, 2025

Wow, that’s harsh. They could genuinely care.

    • Mark V June 27, 2025

Perhaps. But I’m skeptical of all monarchs’ motives.

A hero’s farewell for a real hero! We need to honor all our soldiers like this.

Sad story indeed. Why do young people always end up paying the highest price in conflicts?
