On October 17, a flurry of people poured into the police Crime Suppression Division office, lodging complaints against the illustrious iCon Group. The government, standing firm in the face of public concern, has pledged swift progress on this front. The ever-vigilant Department of Special Investigation (DSI) is poised to handle the intricacies of this high-profile case. Deputy Prime Minister Phumtham Wechayachai emphasized the commitment to a swift resolution after he was thoroughly briefed by police investigators nestled within the prestigious walls of Government House. Beside him were the esteemed national police chief Kitrat Phanphet and erudite representatives from the DSI and the Anti-Money Laundering Office (Amlo).

The very core of this investigation reverberates with a case of monumental proportions. With financial damages surpassing a staggering 300 million baht and impacting the lives of over 100 individuals, it met the necessary conditions for the DSI to step in. Just this past Thursday, tallying up the numbers painted a clearer picture—the police reported a jaw-dropping 8,137 complaints, culminating in losses amounting to an astronomical 2.41 billion baht, all linked to the direct sales endeavors of iCon.

Deputy Prime Minister Phumtham was quick to clarify that this transition to the DSI is not a simple hand-off meant to sideline either the police or Amlo. The essence here is to refine and enhance the efficacy of the investigative process. “This is not about dodging responsibility; it’s about aligning with legal protocols,” he elaborated, underscoring the continuous collaboration among these three agencies.

Amlo’s role remains resolute, with a keen eye on tracking all assets entangled with iCon. Meanwhile, the police will steadfastly bolster the operations led by the DSI. An entity choosing to sit this one out is the Office of the Consumer Protection Board (OCPB). Rumors whisper of a peculiar connection between The iCon Group and certain individuals within the agency. In 2021, the OCPB even bestowed the company with a consumer protection award, raising eyebrows. Acknowledging these murmurs, the OCPB has decided to abstain from the investigative troupe’s duties.

Pol Lt Gen Jirabhop Bhuridej, leading the commendable police Central Investigation Bureau, confirmed the imminent transfer of the police case summary to the DSI by Monday.

Diving deeper into the case, a notorious ensemble of eighteen individuals, including three headline-garnering celebrities, find themselves tangled in the web of public fraud charges linked to iCon’s operations. As the rumor mill churns with whispers of a second wave of arrests, Pol Lt Gen Jirabhop assures the public that the investigation has yet to set foot on such a path.

And then, enter stage left—a plot twist, if you will. Prison authorities have turned their spotlight towards alleged misconduct by famed lawyer Atchariya Reuangrattanapong. Presiding over the Help Crime Victims Club, Mr. Atchariya allegedly waltzed into an interrogation room uninvited, attempting to conscript Jirawat “Boss Rap” Saengphakdi into legal camaraderie via signature. Declined, his efforts were.

Pramot Thongsri, the interim warden of Bangkok Remand Prison, is tasked with unearthing the truth of whether Mr. Atchariya did indeed step foot in that room as tales suggest. These allegations were sown by none other than Warathaphon “Boss Paul” Waratyaworrakul, the venerated iCon founder and CEO. Enlisting the aid of his lawyer, Withoon Keng-ngarm, he filed a complaint of malfeasance against those in uniform, suspected of paving a clandestine path for Mr. Atchariya.
