In the heart of Yarang district, Patanni – as the moon sat high in the sky and the peaceful locals tucked safely into their beds, a horrific ambush wasfalling onto the brave security forces. At exact 10.50 pm in front of the Tambon Yarang Municipal office on Yarang-Mayo Road, tragedy struck. Precisely calculated and executed with chilling precision, assailants rained down a shower of terror that the peaceful district of Yarang would remember for years to come.
A sturdy, four-door police pickup truck, a swift police motorcyclist, and a daring duo of defense volunteers aboard a motorcycle hemmed the streets. Together, they were a formidable force to be reckoned with – a comforting presence for the villagers asleep in their homes. Little did they know that their peaceful night-patrol would end in a rain of terror thought only possible in the darkest of nightmares.
Without warning and showing no mercy, the ambushers sprung their brutal attack. Expertly wielding assault rifles and grenades, they showed absolute devastation. A horrifying scene unfolded. More than a hundred spent rifle cartridges littered the pavement; the air filled with smoke from the aftermath of grenades, their fragments scattered, a testament to the brutality of the assault. The two-story municipal office, once a symbol of Yarang’s prosperity and growth, was now a pitted canvas of violence, scarred deeply with bullet holes.
The casualties were heart-wrenching. Among the valiant souls who lost their lives were Pol Sen Sgt Maj Tuwaelo Loma, a dedicated peace officer of 48 years, defense volunteers Charmwit Dorloh and Narong Rakaew. Men of 45 and 47 years, respectively, who took pride in their role, who had devoted their lives to the defense of their community – their sacrifice would never be forgotten.
But it was not just their lives that the attack cost. Five other policemen were hurt. 25-year-old Pol Cpl Boonnee Duereh, 32-year-old Pol Cpl Isma-an Jitlang, 29-year-old Pol Cpl Sarawut Susan, 22-year-old Pol L/C Thanathat Chokmak, and 25-year-old Pol L/C Thawat Senrit. Brave officers of the law, their efforts to shield their community from harm would be forever etched in the annals of Yarang history.
Adding to the chaos, the malicious attackers took their destructive capabilities to a larger scale. They bombed five of the area’s power poles at three separate locations. Blocking the roads and spurring local blackouts, a terrifying night became even darker. Their objective was crystal clear – to disrupt the pursuit and leave the district in a cover of darkness.
As the dawn of the new day broke and wounds of the past night were still fresh, the authorities beefed up their security measures. Adding more checkpoints in the area and intensifying the pursuit, they remained undeterred in their mission to find these attackers, bring them to justice, and restore peace and security to their beloved district of Yarang.
