In a solemn procession befitting his respected status, the coffin of Israeli Rabbi Zvi Kogan was borne aloft through the streets of Kfar Habad, Israel. As mourners gathered to pay their final respects on a somber Monday, a shadow of worry loomed over both Israel and the wider world following the concerning murder in the United Arab Emirates. Grief mingled with anxiety, as this act of violence has sent ripples of fear across continents.

At the heart of this international disturbance is a grave warning issued by Israel: the danger of terrorism against its citizens in Southeast Asia has heightened. The Israeli National Security Council announced on Saturday that intelligence points to those involved in the heinous crimes against Rabbi Kogan plotting further havoc, this time casting a threatening gaze towards Southeast Asia, with an unsettling emphasis on Thailand.

The narrative unfolded tragically in Dubai, where Rabbi Kogan’s body was discovered on November 24, days after he was reported missing. Swift action by United Arab Emirates authorities led to the arrest of three suspects, allegedly involved in the cold-blooded murder of the rabbi, who shared ties to both Israel and Moldova. However, the UAE Ministry of Interior has been tight-lipped about the identities of the detained.

In a declaration underscoring the UAE’s commitment to the safety of its denizens and visitors alike, their Ministry of Interior has pledged to continue thorough investigations. Meanwhile, Israeli officials, from Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on down, have condemned Kogan’s murder, labeling it a “repugnant act of antisemitic terrorism.”

In an assertive statement during a decisive cabinet meeting on November 24, Netanyahu vowed, “The State of Israel will employ all means at our disposal to ensure that these murderers, and those who orchestrated their actions, are brought to the full measure of justice.” He punctuated his promise with an uncompromising resolve: “None of them will escape.”

In the aftermath of this tragedy, Israeli citizens are being urged to reconsider non-essential travel to the UAE. Moreover, they are advised to steer clear of prominently Jewish and Israeli venues, exercise caution on social media about travel plans, and limit movement to known safe areas.

Echoing these sentiments, the White House described the murder as a dual assault on the UAE and its denouncement of violent extremism. Commending the UAE’s swift efforts, US National Security Council spokesperson Sean Savett underscored, “Those responsible for this crime, alongside any abettors, deserve to face full accountability.” The US entity continues to express concerns about ongoing threats targeting Israelis and Jewish individuals in the region.

The backdrop to these distressing developments is the currently tense geopolitical climate, especially following the onset of the Israel-Hamas conflict in October 2023. With heightened concerns of attacks by Iran or Iran-supported entities, Israel has elevated its emergency advisories in numerous countries, including the UAE.

Prime Minister Netanyahu extended his gratitude towards the UAE for their cooperative stance in investigating Rabbi Kogan’s untimely demise. “Together, we will enhance our ties against whoever threatens the peace we’ve forged,” he asserted, alluding to a shared vision of regional stability despite the ‘axis of evil.’

Rabbi Kogan, at the age of 28, was not only a spiritual leader but a bridge-builder, fostering Jewish life as part of the Chabad-Lubavitch mission in the Emirates. Alongside his wife, Rivky, whom he married in 2022, Kogan endeavored to lay down roots for Jewish communities there, striving to make kosher food more accessible, among other goals. His dedication is now etched into the pages of a broader struggle against intolerance.

This violent act, described by Israeli President Isaac Herzog as a “vile antisemitic attack,” serves as a grim reminder of the ongoing fight against hatred. Yet, it also galvanizes a commitment to persevere and ensure that Jewish communities continue to grow and thrive, both in the UAE and across the globe.
