Patong Beach Tsunami Drill on July 29, 2025: Mayor Lalita Maneesri Leads Preparations

In a twist that no one saw coming, the sun-kissed sands of Patong Beach in Thailand became a hub of unexpected civic engagement this week. Amongst sunbathers in bikinis and the laid-back beachgoers sipping on their favorite cocktails, town hall officials took to the streets to deliver an important message about an upcoming tsunami drill. Under the leadership of the dynamic Mayor Lalita Maneesri, accompanied by councillors, civil defense leaders, and disaster response teams sporting their hi-vis gear, the team set out on Monday, July 21, determined to inform the public about the major evacuation simulation set for July 29.

As the heart of one of Thailand’s most bustling beaches, the significance of this drill was clear to Mayor Lalita. “We’re not here to scare people, quite the opposite,” she declared. “Patong is one of Thailand’s busiest beaches. We want everyone, locals and tourists alike, to know exactly what to do if the worst happens.” Her mission was clear – instill confidence and preparedness amongst both the local populace and tourists alike.

The information campaign kicked off at the Sea Pearl Intersection on the iconic Thaweewong Road, with flyers handed out and detailed escape routes explained to an audience of sun-seekers, shopkeepers, and even the bustling massage parlour workers. The message was further amplified with the help of the Phuket News, ensuring no stone was left unturned in creating awareness. The drill is slated to start at 1 PM on July 29, at Bangla Square, conveniently nestled near the police box on Patong Beach. As the sirens ring out, participants will weave through the escape route, darting up Bangla Road, meandering through Soi Saensabai, and heading for the safety of a designated zone in a nearby car park. “It’s just a drill, nobody’s in danger,” a disaster prevention officer emphasized, reminding the public that this could indeed be a life-saver one day.

To this day, Patong remains a cornerstone of Phuket’s tourism, critically situated within the tsunami-prone region. Thus, the importance of such preparedness drills cannot be overstated. Authorities have advised motorists and pedestrians to steer clear of the area during the exercise, ensuring an orderly and efficient simulation.

Meanwhile, in more lighthearted news, moving around Phuket – from beach chilling to bar hopping – just got a tech-savvy upgrade. The rather chaotic public transport scene has been graced with a new wave of innovation through the digital marvel that is Phuket OneMap. Forget apps; all it takes is a quick glance at your phone to view live bus routes, stops, and real-time arrivals. A spokesperson from the Tourism Authority of Thailand praised Phuket OneMap as a tool designed to make traversing the island easier and more confidence-boosting for both tourists and locals alike.

As the vibrant town of Patong braces for its wave of simulation exercises, it’s reassuring to see the earnest efforts and innovative strides paving the way for a safer, more accessible experience for everyone. Whether it’s ensuring safety through well-organized drills or offering digital ease to daily commutes, Phuket continues to blend relaxation with responsibility, a true testament to its thriving appeal.

Why would they pick peak tourist season for a drill? Seems like they’ll just scare off visitors.

    • LisaSays July 23, 2025

It’s better to inconvenience a few for safety training than risk lives later.

      • Joe B. July 23, 2025

I get the safety part, but couldn’t they have planned it in a less busy time?

    • Daniel G. July 23, 2025

Tourists need to know what to do as much as locals. It’s a busy beach all year round.

I think it’s great they’re taking these precautions. It shows they care about safety.

Absolutely! Plus, it might even become a tourist attraction in itself.

    • Helen98 July 23, 2025

I wonder if tourists will even take it seriously though.

They should, if they understand the risks involved.

  3. TravelOrBust July 23, 2025

I’ve seen drills like these before, they usually go unnoticed by tourists anyway.

Can’t believe some people are complaining about this. Safety first, folks!

Agreed, but communication is key, they should have announced it earlier.

Seems like they did a good job with the flyers and news reporting.

I doubt a lot of tourists will participate. They’ll probably just keep sipping their piña coladas.

I love the innovative approach of Phuket OneMap. It’s about time we had something like this!

Hope they at least do a better job than that infamous false alarm in Hawaii a few years back.

    • Larry D. July 23, 2025

Yeah, but this isn’t an alarm, it’s a planned drill. Big difference.

      • PracticalPat July 23, 2025

True, but it’s the execution that counts. Fingers crossed.

  13. Alexis July 23, 2025

Are we supposed to feel more confident or anxious after this drill?

  14. BeachBum4Life July 23, 2025

I think it will barely affect anyone’s holiday. They’ll manage well.

    • Sam T. July 23, 2025

Let’s just hope everyone respects the drill and goes along with it.
