In the digital age, where connections are formed with the swipe of a finger and love can bloom in the most unexpected of places, it’s vital to remember the wise adage: “All that glitters is not gold.” For one retired Thai nurse, the allure of online romance shimmered with the promise of companionship and prosperity but resulted in a heartbreak that cost her nearly 12 million baht.

This cautionary tale begins on a seemingly ordinary day last year when our unsuspecting protagonist, a 65-year-old retiree, was charmed by a woman named Da via TikTok. Da, a charismatic figure, claimed to be a lonely heart in search of a kindred spirit. Her story was as old as time, yet told with the freshness of modern digital flair.

Before long, what started as innocent exchanges on TikTok blossomed into a digital affair. With the classic cloak of romance, Da proposed an enticing financial opportunity. She spun a tantalizing web of investment promises, backed by an alleged family connection to a leading cryptocurrency firm in Singapore. It was an offer too golden to refuse—or so it seemed.

Trust, however misplaced, can be as compelling as a potion, and it wasn’t long before the retired nurse found herself transferring funds to Da. She started small, with a cautious investment of 5,000 baht, which was soon returned with generous interest. Enthusiasm might have clouded judgment, as subsequent transfers followed, snowballing into a staggering total of nearly 12 million baht between February and March.

The caveat only appeared once the victim attempted to withdraw her investment. Da, with the deftness of a seasoned trickster, mentioned an unexpected snag: a hefty tax of 10%—a cool 5 million baht—to release the funds. Alas, as the retired nurse’s savings dwindled, so too did Da’s presence. Communication sputtered and eventually ceased, leaving the victim in a daze of realization—she had been ensnared in a tale as old as trust itself.

The saga didn’t end there. The resilient nurse, despite this extraordinary betrayal, took a stand. Yesterday, on June 15, she approached the Foundation Campaigning to Reclaim Social Justice for guidance, narrating her ordeal before the public and the press. Her story, supported by the Foundation’s President, Ronnarong Kaewphet, sparked a new chapter of justice-seeking.

With plans to unmask Da’s true identity and expose any guises she might wear, the foundation seeks to empower the victim by setting legal wheels in motion. Meanwhile, Da’s true whereabouts and intentions remain shrouded in mystery, a digital specter haunting the shadows of the internet.

This poignant tale of love turned deception serves as a reminder for all who wander the vast landscape of online connections: amidst the pixels of promise, tread with care and skepticism. Verification, after all, is the armor against digital duplicity. For anyone chasing the dual dreams of love and prosperity, remembering this story might just be the key to safeguarding one’s heart—and wallet.

In a world bustling with digital love stories, let this one echo as a heartfelt reminder that in this age of instant connections, vigilance is more valuable than ever.

I hear you, but I’d rather stick to traditional ways. At least I can see who I’m dealing with in person.
