Deep beneath the bustling center of Nakhon Si Thammarat’s central sports stadium, history has revealed itself in an intriguing manner. Three separate sets of skeletal remains of what is surmised to have belonged to individuals laid to rest over a century ago have made a surprise appearance during routine construction work. The discovery, made while establishing a drainage pipe, has stirred energetic murmurs and hypothesizing among local officials and the archaeological community
The dramatic revelation took place in Tha Wang Subdistrict, Mueang District, in the vicinity of two football pitches. The clusters of skeletal fragments infiltrated the construction site, bringing the regular work to an abrupt pause. Workmen maneuvering a backhoe to dig about 1 metre in-ground for the pipe found themselves unearthing more than they anticipated. Present were not only fragments of leg and forearm bones but also craniums, each set distributed about 20 to 30 meters from each other!
Adding mystery to these skeletal remains was the comparative analysis. The bone structure appeared noticeably larger than the average modern human bone. Aside from the larger fragments, several dozen smaller pieces were also part of the find. The layout of these remains, reminiscent of a graveyard, suggested that the stadium ground was likely an ancient burial site preceding the sports venue.
Historically, this land had belonged to the Chat Trakankosol family. Generations ago, they had donated this piece of land for the construction of Nakhon Si Thammarat’s sports ground. The reports of remnants from an erstwhile graveyard or an old mausoleum from Sanook add distinct layers to the tale of this stadium.
This discovery incidentally aligns with past finds such as Sri Thammarat Suksa School, known for housing the eternal abode or mausoleum alignments of key historical figures of the region. This goes to emphasize the historical significance and archeological richness of the Nakhon Si Thammarat region.
The current series of finds were kicked off during work for improving the football field located within the central sports stadium compound. This revelation isn’t unique; in fact, a single set of skeletal remains was found earlier too, rounding off the count of unearthed remains to four sets! The ancient cement blocks burying these bones adds another piece to the puzzle, enlivening the otherwise unexciting drainage pipe construction work.
The key players in this archaeological drama, the Department of Fine Arts and Ministry of Culture, are now tasked with authenticating the origins of these ancient skeletal fragments. All remains have been meticulously collected and preserved for comprehensive examination as part of this verification process.
This delightful detour into history at the central sports stadium in Nakhon Si Thammarat reiterates that past and present are never too far apart. As the city pulses with the energy of sports, it also sits atop stories as old as time, waiting to be told and retold.
