As the sun sets on an era marked by benevolence and compassion, the Ministry of Culture extends an invitation to all to pay their respects and share condolences at the Apostolic Nunciature to Thailand until this Saturday. The nation joins in mourning after the unexpected passing of Pope Francis on Monday, an event that has reverberated across the globe.

In a heartfelt message, Culture Minister Sudawan Wangsuphakijkosol conveyed her sorrow and deeply felt condolences, describing the 266th Pope of the Roman Catholic Church as a beacon of spiritual enlightenment, wisdom, and selflessness. “He was a spiritual leader who dedicated his life to the causes of peace, justice, and unity among all peoples,” she reflected. Her thoughts resonate with the memories of his official visit to Thailand in 2019, a monumental event that symbolized the enduring friendship between the Vatican and the Kingdom of Thailand.

“On behalf of the Ministry of Culture and followers of all religions,” she lamented, “I express my deepest sorrow at the passing of Pope Francis. May God grant peace to his soul in heaven, and may his legacy of love and peace continue to inspire Christians around the world.”

The minister further noted the multifaith solidarity in this time of loss, as representatives from Thailand’s five major religions have also extended their condolences. In addition, Catholic churches throughout Thailand have been urged to organize memorial services, providing a collective space for the nation’s Catholics to honor and remember the life and deeds of Pope Francis.

Until Saturday, the Apostolic Nunciature in Thailand opens its doors to the public, inviting everyone to pen their messages of condolence between 10am and 4pm at its Sathon district office in Bangkok. This simple act of writing a message—in a world riddled with digital convenience—holds a timeless, heartfelt grace, a gesture of solidarity and remembrance in ink and paper.

In a show of collective mourning, the Assumption Cathedral in Bang Rak district will host a special Mass tomorrow at 5pm, a gathering that promises to be both somber and uplifting as the community comes together in prayer and reflection.

In reverence to the fallen pope, government offices under the Culture Ministry have committed to a poignant tribute by lowering the national flag to half-mast for a span of three days, from April 23 to 25. This simple yet profound act serves as a solemn reminder of Pope Francis’s enduring impact on hearts and minds worldwide and his unwavering dedication to humanity’s common good.
