It seems Thailand is playing a dangerous game, acting as a pawn in a global “swap mart” of dissent—a market where foreign critics are bartered, much like commodities, for Thai dissidents hiding abroad.
The report titled “‘We Thought We Were Safe’: Repression and Refoulment of Refugees in Thailand” unveils a grim uptick in atrocities against those seeking refuge from their homelands’ nightmares. The harrowing accounts include harassment, surveillance, and chilling acts of violence, often orchestrated with a nod and a wink from Thai officials.
Imagine seeking safe harbor only to find yourself trapped in a sinister cycle of arrest and deportation, without a whisper of due process. “Thai authorities have delved deeper into the murky waters of international collusion, swapping dissidents with neighboring tyrants,” Elaine Pearson, Asia director at Human Rights Watch (HRW), lamented.
