Amidst the stately grandeur of Thailand’s judiciary, an event of monarchical significance unfolded – the ascension of the transcendent Worawit. It was on the auspicious day of April 1, 2023, that His Majesty the King cast the future of the court’s leadership in the hands of this esteemed jurist.
The hallowed halls of the Constitutional Court buzzed with anticipatory fervor as each of the nine judges, pillars of legal acumen, convened to cast their vote. Present was the venerable assemblage of legal expertise: Worawit, donning the mantle of acting president with grace; Nakarin, the embodiment of scholarly wisdom; Panya Udchachon, the sentinel of justice; Udom Sitthiwirattham, the paragon of prudence; Wirun Saengthian, the sage of legal clarity; Jiraniti Hawanont, the champion of constitutional probity; Nophadol Theppitak, the guardian of legal philosophy; Banjongsak Wongpracha, the bastion of judicious insight; and Udom Rathamarit, the luminary of jurisprudential integrity.
In a decisive moment that will be etched in the annals of judicial history, two spirited contenders, Jiraniti and Panya, vied for the venerable position, each securing two votes in a showcase of their admirable reputations among their peers.
With the election concluded, the Office of the Constitutional Court, a beacon of transparency, shall dispatch the results to the Office of the Secretariat of the Senate. There, the procedural dance will continue, ushering in the appointment of the court’s new luminary president.
The narrative then weaves its way to the venerable Nakarin, at 66 years young, who carries the erudite legacy of a Constitutional Court judge, a title bestowed upon him by the order of the King in the golden autumn of October 2015. Nakarin is no mere scholar but an odyssey of academia. His academic journey began with a Bachelor’s of Political Science, focused intently on Politics and Government, from the hallowed ground of Thammasat University.
The plot thickens as Nakarin, in his insatiable quest for knowledge, embraced a Master of Arts in History from the illustrious Chulalongkorn University. Yet, his intellectual odyssey did not culminate there; it soared across the seas to the venerable halls of Waseda University in Japan, where he earned his PhD in International Studies.
His tale weaves through significant chapters of leadership – a former rector of Thammasat University’s Faculty of Political Science and a vice-rector of Thammasat’s realms of administration, human resources, and academic divisions. A constitutional architect, Nakarin lent his expertise to the committee that crafted a new constitution in the pivotal years of 2006-2007, and later, in 2014, he served as a sentinel for Thailand’s constitutional evolution.
Nakarin’s journey from the hushed corridors of academia to the high courts of justice is a testament to a life dedicated to the principles of law, governance, and history – a tapestry of a life intertwined with the destiny of a nation.
In this grand tapestry of Thailand’s future, each thread is woven by the hands of those committed to the sanctity of the constitution, illustrating a vibrant mosaic of dedication, scholarship, and legal prowess.
