Tragic Collision in Nakhon Si Thammarat: Police Officer Wicharn Under Investigation for Fatal DUI

In a heart-wrenching turn of events that has shaken the southern province of Nakhon Si Thammarat, a tragic incident unfolded on the evening of Sunday, June 15. A police officer, tasked with upholding the law, instead found himself on the wrong side of it. The officer, identified as Police Senior Sergeant Major Wicharn, is under scrutiny following a catastrophic series of collisions on Sai Serm Chart Road that resulted in the tragic death of a 62-year-old woman.

The unfortunate victim, Pornthip Chonwijit, was on her motorcycle when the officer, reportedly under the heavy influence of alcohol, slammed into her, sending her body reeling onto the hood of his grey sedan before it tragically landed on the pavement. Prior to this, Wicharn had already caused damage to a parked car at Jampa Temple and made a reckless attempt to flee, crashing into another vehicle shortly thereafter.

Eyewitnesses swiftly intervened, risking their safety to subdue the intoxicated officer and confiscate his firearm, effectively preventing any further mayhem. In an emotional recount, Pornthip’s relative, Sujinda Chaiyanong, recounted to ThaiRath the chilling moment the accident occurred right before her eyes, a scene she initially couldn’t fathom involved her beloved family member.

As the investigation continues, Thung Song Police Station’s Superintendent, Teerawut Thepluean, has vowed that justice will prevail. The officer, Wicharn, has been temporarily relieved of his duties pending the legal process. This case is particularly severe given Wicharn’s position of trust and the public outrage it has sparked.

Wicharn is now embroiled in a legal quagmire, facing an array of serious charges. These include violating Section 291 of the Criminal Law, which addresses reckless behavior resulting in death, carrying a potential sentence of up to ten years’ imprisonment and a hefty fine. Moreover, under the Land Transport Act, he is charged with driving under the influence causing death, fleeing the scene without offering assistance, and driving with blatant disregard for public safety, each carrying severe penalties.

Currently receiving medical attention, Wicharn’s future hangs in a balance of legal and moral reckoning. Once his condition stabilizes, interrogation will follow, contributing further to the public discourse on accountability and the responsibility of those in law enforcement roles.

In the backdrop of this tragedy, the Thai community grapples with a mixture of outrage, grief, and the relentless call for justice. As developments unfold, it remains a poignant reminder of the profound responsibility law officers bear and the devastating consequences when that duty is forsaken.

Thailand remains abuzz with various events, from new waves of digital fraud to bizarre marine invasions at Pattaya Beach, yet the loss of Pornthip Chonwijit remains a stark and somber tale in a sea of rippling news tides. A narrative intertwining law, loss, and the undying quest for justice—this incident resonates beyond its immediate circle, touching the very core of societal trust and accountability.

It’s horrific to think that someone sworn to protect the public could cause such tragedy due to personal negligence. This erodes trust in the entire police force.

    • Robbie93 June 17, 2025

Exactly! How can we trust police officers if they’re out there drinking and driving? More stringent policies need to be in place.

      • Anna P. June 17, 2025

True, but it’s not just about policies, it’s about treating such behavior with seriousness and ensuring accountability.

    • Cathy B. June 17, 2025

I struggle to believe that every officer is like this. It’s a mistake, albeit a severe one. Don’t we all deserve a second chance?

      • Robbie93 June 17, 2025

Second chance? A life was lost because of his ‘mistake’. We need examples made to ensure others learn.

  2. Mark_89 June 17, 2025

Honestly, this case is sad. But my question is about the policies themselves. How was Wicharn allowed on duty after prior reckless behavior incidents? The system is flawed.

  3. LizJ June 17, 2025

Wicharn should never be allowed back on the force. He violated the fundamental trust endowed upon him by the badge.

    • Neil June 17, 2025

Liz, I agree. A badge is not just an accessory; it symbolizes trust and duty. It’s unforgivable.

    • OfficerSmith June 17, 2025

While I see your point, we can’t deny that stress in the police force is high. Maybe if there were better mental health support, incidents like this might reduce.

      • LizJ June 17, 2025

I can understand workplace stress, but that’s no excuse for irresponsible behavior that endangers civilians.

  4. C. Thomas June 17, 2025

Loads of police officers do their job with integrity, focusing on one negative case shouldn’t blind us to that fact.

    • Jake M. June 17, 2025

But don’t you think every tragic event overshadows any good done elsewhere? One bad apple spoils the bunch.

      • C. Thomas June 17, 2025

It’s a shame how quickly society generalizes. We need to focus on strengthening oversight, not vilifying the entire force.

This reminds me of the issue of police militarization. Is it influencing aggressive behavior in officers?

    • FlashGordon June 17, 2025

Interesting point, but I think it’s more about individual accountability. Militarization might play a part in aggression, but DUI is a personal choice.

Just another example of how power corrupts. The laws need to be stricter for law enforcers themselves.

  7. Bobbie Lee June 17, 2025

This officer’s actions don’t happen in isolation. There’s a systemic issue with power accountability.

  8. KevinSing099 June 17, 2025

It’s tragic all around. I hope Pornthip’s family gets justice. That’s the most pressing concern.

  9. Sam K. June 17, 2025

The police force should have zero tolerance for this kind of behavior. Immediate dismissal should be a standard.

  10. Timmy12 June 17, 2025

Isn’t firing too harsh for a mistake? People can learn, right?

    • Sara_L June 17, 2025

A mistake cost someone’s life. There needs to be consequences that align with such gravity.

    • Sam K. June 17, 2025

Training and rehabilitation for such behavior might help, but losing a job as a consequence seems reasonable given the circumstances.

  11. Janine89 June 17, 2025

Driving under the influence for anyone is unacceptable, but it’s ten times more critical when it’s a police officer.
