The National Broadcasting and Telecommunication Commission auctioned three of five satellite orbital slot packages to three bidders for 806 million baht on Sunday.
It stated none of the three qualified companies bid for packages one or five, but the commission auctioned the other three for 806.076 million baht.
The commission approved three companies to bid last week: Space Tech Innovation, a Thaicom subsidiary, Prompt Technical Services, a 2000 electrical installation service company, and state-run National Telecom.
Thailand received the following five packages from the International Telecommunication Union:
Package 1: 50.5 degrees East slot with C1, N1, and P1R networks, and 51 degrees East slot with 51 network. The bidding began at 374 million baht.
Package 2: 78.5 degrees East, with networks A2B and LSX2R. The bidding began at 360 million baht.
Package 3: 119.5 degrees East on the IP1, P3, and LSX3R networks, and 120 degrees East on the 120E network. The bidding began at 397 million baht.
Package 4: 126E network with 126 degrees East. The bidding began at 8.06 million baht.
Package 5: 142 degrees East, with networks G3K and N5. The bidding began at 189 million baht.
The three firms’ representatives gathered at the commission’s headquarters at 7am to begin auction preparations. Commission chairman Sarana Boonbaichaiyapruck gave a speech to commence bidding at 10 am.
Sequential ascending clock bidding lasted 20 minutes per round. Taps could raise a package’s price by 5%.
To avoid collusion, lots determined bidding order. Packages were auctioned in order: 4, 3, 5, 2, and 1.
The commission has not announced the winning bids for the three packages.
One bidder tapped Package 4 in two minutes, according to reports. Package 4 satellites can broadcast and communicate throughout Asia-Pacific. It cost 9.076 million baht.
Package 3, which can be used for broadband connectivity in Southeast Asia, North Asia, Australia, and Indochina, was auctioned at 10:15am and ended at 10.21am with one bid. It cost 417 million baht.
An IT glitch halted bidding for 10 minutes. The Asia-Pacific Package 5 auction began at 10:40 am. The system board showed “unsold” at 10:46 am, ending the auction.
Package 2 auctioned at 11am. Thaicom 6 and Thaicom 8 already use the slot for broadcast satellites.
Two bids finished Package 2’s first round at 11.05am. The second round began at 11.10am and ended at 11:16am with one bidder winning the package for 380 million baht.
No bids were received for Package 1 from 11:30 to 11:36.
