In 2023, on the auspicious date of August 1st, the noteworthy Metropolitan Electricity Authority (MEA) proudly celebrated its significant 65th anniversary. This commemorative occasion was thematically encapsulated as “65th MEA SPARK the Sustainable Future”. A profound undertone of altruism permeated the event as attendees were invited to contribute donations to two pivotal foundations, primarily, the Holt Sahathai Foundation, dedicated to providing nurturing environments for orphans and the Foundation for Child Development, which aims to foster holistic child development and innovative thinking.
The celebration paid tribute to the exceptional contributions of the MEA, steered by the driving principle of the organisation: “Triple Go for Goal”. This mission encompasses three central tenets including Go Smart, Go Digital, and Go Green, unified under the visionary mission statement “Energy for City Life, Energize Smart Living”.
Distinguished MR. Wilas Chaloeysat, the Chairman of the MEA, elucidated that, “The Go Smart scheme prioritizes the modernization of power distribution systems through the strategic integration of state-of-the-art technology to fortify stability and reliability. Programs such as the advanced Smart Metro Grid, equipped with 33,265 smart meters, streamline data interaction with the online system of MEA, thus accelerating efficient management of power systems and failure analysis.”
Moreover, he revealed ambitious forecasts for 2027 including, “The installation of approximately 441,400 smart meters across designated zones in conjunction with the sophisticated technology employed for the distribution transformers as a part of the Transformer Load Monitoring (TLM) project. This endeavour aims to bolster the expansion strategy of the MEA and amplify the functional efficiency of the electricity network. Around 62,400 smart meters will be fully operative across all MEA zones.”
In addition to this, the MEA is diligently poring over an underground cable project, primarily focused around the development zone of the electric sky train along various routes. Fresh updates are expected in 2023. During this year, an additional 29 kilometres of overhead electrical lines will be relocated underground, encompassing an impressive total of 91 kilometres. Concurrently, MEA aims to complete the underground cable project spanning a total of 236.1 kilometres by 2027, while envisaging further expansion of another 1,140.8 kilometres, amassing a grand total of 1,454.3 kilometres in the future.
The MEA’s Go Digital initiative marks its metamorphosis into a ‘Fully Digital Service’ provider, offering diverse online services like the MEASY transaction platform and the revolutionary blockchain-based Electronic Letter of Guarantee (eLG). An additional feather in MEA’s e-cap is the EV Data Roaming system that expands functionalities for MEA EV Application users from charting charging station locations to managing payments.
In the spirit of Go Green, MEA is fostering the growth of an EV Ecosystem integrated with a Smart Charging system to prevent overload issues. The recent inauguration of the MEA EV Super Charge, an ultra-efficient 120 kW electric charger located at Wattanawipas Building, serves as the headquarters of MEA in Khlong Toei. It is impeccably connected to Solar PV systems and Battery Storage, further uplifting the customer service experience in Bangkok.
The MEA’s environmental initiatives culminate in its underground cable project, where electricity poles are repurposed for coastal erosion protection around Phra Chulachomklao Fort and in the coastal domains around Bang Khun Thian. This showcases the unwavering commitment of MEA to the preservation of mangroves and environmental sustainability at large.
MEA is also devoutly committed to public sector solar projects intended for residential users and aims to elevate educational institutes by setting examples of energy and environment conservation through the “Energy Mind Award Season 2” initiative. The “MEA Energy Awards” endeavour seeks to optimize energy usage in buildings and guarantee standardised indoor air quality, synergising with the government’s pursuit of carbon neutrality.
The golden 65th-anniversary celebration of MEA truly encapsulates the organisation’s unwavering dedication to construct a sustainable future while delivering impeccable services to the community at large.
