Lee Young Ae’s Incredible Support Brings Thai Student Home from South Korea

In a heartwarming demonstration of international solidarity, a Thai student has safely returned to her homeland after facing a life-threatening ordeal in South Korea. The journey home was a remarkable collaboration involving various entities, highlighted by the generous contributions of the illustrious Korean actress, Lee Young Ae.

The Immigration Bureau (IB) shared that Sirinya, a young student whose last name remains undisclosed, had slipped into a coma while undertaking studies at Chonnam National University (CNU) in the bustling city of Gwangju. Her sudden collapse in July was attributed to a subdural hematoma, thrusting her into a prolonged state of unconsciousness that spanned more than a quarter of a year.

In a race against time and mounting medical expenses, Sirinya’s family found themselves overwhelmed by the spiraling costs required for her treatment and the logistics of returning her to Thailand. However, the dire situation sparked the deeply compassionate CNU’s Rhythm of Hope Volunteering Club into action. With unwavering resolve, they initiated a fundraising campaign, aiming to collect nine million won to cover the extensive expenses.

As their efforts gained momentum, the campaign captured hearts both within the confines of the university and beyond. Students, lecturers, and members of the public rallied to the cause, driven by an indomitable spirit of compassion and goodwill. This growing wave of support ultimately reached the esteemed actress Lee Young Ae, best known for her iconic role in “Dae Jang Geum: Jewel in the Palace.” Demonstrating exemplary altruism, she generously contributed 10 million won (approximately 224,000 baht), a pivotal donation that catalyzed Sirinya’s return to Thailand.

The journey from Gwangju to Bangkok was meticulously orchestrated, ensuring that Sirinya’s medical needs were prioritized every step of the way. Korean Air, showcasing its commitment to humanitarian endeavors, arranged specialized seating to accommodate Sirinya and her vital medical apparatus. This included crucial oxygen tanks, which were lovingly ensconced aboard flight KE653. As the plane touched down at Bangkok’s Suvarnabhumi Airport precisely at 11:20 PM on Saturday, the stage was set for a seamless transition to ongoing medical care in Thailand.

Coordinating the logistics at Suvarnabhumi required a concerted effort, with the IB partnering with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Airports of Thailand Plc. Their collaborative prowess ensured that Sirinya’s arrival was expertly expedited, enabling her immediate transfer to a local hospital under stringent medical supervision.

This poignant narrative is an enduring testament to the profound bonds that can be formed when humanity converges in the face of adversity. Sirinya’s story, amplified by Lee Young Ae’s heartening act of kindness, is a timeless reminder of the power of community and compassion transcending borders to rewrite the course of a life imperiled by unforeseen circumstances.

I agree, but what about all the everyday people who contributed? They deserve just as much recognition!

Absolutely, Tommy. It’s heartening to see so many people come together for a good cause.

It’s great that Sirinya made it home safely, but doesn’t this situation highlight some flaws in international student support? Students should have better protection abroad.

    • AnnaBelle November 17, 2025

That’s a valid point. Schools and countries need to ensure the well-being of international students, especially in emergencies.

I’m skeptical. Why was it a celebrity’s responsibility to foot such a large bill instead of the insurance or government? Something feels off.

    • Maya Lee November 17, 2025

Surely insurance should have covered it, but governments often move slowly in these cases. At least Lee Young Ae stepped up.

Insurance and government support are ideally there for situations like this, but bureaucracy can be slow. Immediate help was necessary.

Just imagine if governments responded as swiftly and generously as these volunteers and citizens did. We need better support systems in place.
