On the recent past, a pivotal meeting was orchestrated by the Deputy Prime Minister and Interior Minister, Anutin Charnvirakul. It consisted of the country’s provincial governors, among others. Breaking down the agenda, the primary focus areas were upholding loyalty to the highest institution, effective rolling out of anti-corruption measures, and the endorsement of the Pheu Thai’s remarkable 10,000-baht digital wallet scheme. The Centara Grand at Central Plaza Lat Phrao, located in the heart of Bangkok, served as the perfect backdrop for this gathering. A diverse group of attendees graced the meeting, including the interior minister’s deputies, Songsak Thongsri and Chada Thaiset, provincial governors, and key officials from the Ministry of the Interior.

Anutin stressed on the need to fortify the digital wallet strategy, an innovative scheme enabling individuals to make purchases within a four-kilometre radius from their official residence. To bolster this policy, he proposed that the governors devise comprehensive strategies that could stimulate local production and foster innovation. “The crux of the matter lies in thwarting any manifestations of corruption. The beneficiaries of the 10,000-baht digital wallet should be the sole recipients of its advantages. Our priority is to ensure that the entire sum reaches its rightful recipients, those aged 16 or above,” stated Anutin.

Simultaneously, he alerted the authorities about potential fraudulent activities that could exploit the system, such as intermediaries allegedly offering to trade the 10,000-baht digital wallet for a smaller sum of 3,000-baht in tangible cash. Thus Anutin reassured all governors that his team stands fully equipped and ready to handle such instances. He further assured that he himself, along with his deputies, would always be accessible for assistance, as mentioned in the Bangkok Post.

Humanizing himself, Anutin projected an image of simplicity, stating that he appreciates basic, authentic experiences over any grand pretentious displays during his provincial visits. “A fancy welcome, sightseeing, or dining, are unnecessary for me. Let’s stick to the basics,” he candidly said. He also called upon all governors to uphold utmost diligence and integrity in their duties.

Touching upon the topic of bureaucracy and favoritism, he strongly emphasized that promotions should be meritorious rather than preferential. Advising every government servant to exercise vigilance against any such misdemeanors, he welcomed them to report any instances of corruption – even by capturing them on video if need be. Further, he also highlighted the need for state officials within the ministry to stay updated on new technologies such as the digital wallet, as it could immensely enhance public welfare. Therefore, they have the responsibility to constantly learn and adapt.
