Thailand’s government is being implored to step up its game in human resources development, with a forward-looking vision towards Society 5.0. A quick insight into what comprises Society 5.0; think of this as an era where innovative technology and artificial intelligence (AI) will be the powerhouses galvanizing the global economy. This call for action was articulated by none other than Suphachai Chearavanont, the Chairman of Global Compact Network Thailand (GCNT).
This statement was made at the GCNT Forum 2023, centered around “Partnership for Human Capital 5.0 towards Sustainable Intelligence (SI)-Based Society”. The chairman inferred that a primary ingredient for propelling Thailand into the orbit of the United Nations Framework for Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) would be enhancing human resources.
With AI and cutting-edge technology claiming the driver’s seat in the economic and social development, bolstered human resources will be paramount for steering Society 5.0 successfully. Drawing attention to the global human capital index, Mr Suphachai drilled home the fact that Thailand’s present investment in human resource development is underwhelming compared to its GDP growth.
“Time is not a luxury we have”, he claimed. “With Society 5.0 at our doorstep, we need to buckle up for the onslaught of challenges rooted in the dearth of profound knowledge and advanced technological skills. Prepping our human resources to establish an SI Society should be a top priority. Hence, fostering strong norms and ethical values to ensure ‘SI over AI’, should be integral to our strategy. This can serve as a shield against potential technology misuse”, Suphachai advised.
He proposed that education institutions amp up their efforts to hone the capacity and skills of Thailand’s student population numbering 12.5 million, getting them ready for a future deeply entwined with AI technology. Suphachai also encouraged the private sector to participate, by promoting sound business practices and solid governance to learners.
The Chairman made a point of stating that in facilitating a transition to Society 5.0, responsibility should be a priority. He argued for the need to arm marginal groups like disabled people and migrant workers with new skills. “No one should be left on the sidelines during this shift”, he emphasized.
The Foreign Affairs Minister of Thailand, Parnpree Bahiddha-Nukara, also marked her presence at the event, endorsing the government’s commitment to human resource development. Meanwhile, representing the United Nations team in Thailand, Resident Coordinator Gita Sabharwal affirmed that initiatives such as the GCNT Forum demonstrate Thailand’s earnestness to be a trailblazer in the journey towards sustainable development goals, achieved through tighter cooperation between government and private sectors. Her agenda includes promoting human capital development across 133 member countries and launching a Sustainable Intelligence Youth Club, both by 2030.
