Prepare the raincoats and secure the boats, Thailand’s Meteorological Department (TMD) is predicting abundant rainfall across the northern and northeastern provinces, which might make things a bit wet and wild. Up to 45 provinces, including the thriving city of Bangkok, have been forewarned for a sudden bout of flooding and quick-as-a wink flash floods, especially in the lower lying locales and neighborhoods by the serene waterways.
Your friendly weather predictor, the TMD, has it on good authority that the impending southwestern monsoon is riling up in strength, already spreading out its robust winds over the tranquil Andaman Sea, all of Thailand, and the turquoise Gulf of Thailand. The heart of the matter is a monsoon trough that’s maneuvering its way towards a low-pressure area over northern Vietnam, via the picturesque landscapes of Laos and Thailand.
What does this signify for Thailand’s almost tropical rainforest climate? Most likely an increase in rainfall throughout the country, possibly with a side of heavy downpours. The teeming north, northeast, and east regions might have an additional serving of an extra-juicy, spell-binding drenching. The TMD is urging communities residing there to monitor updates on the expected heavy to extremely heavy rain and accumulated precipitation, which could lead to sudden, swift floods.
Extra alertness is recommended for those in areas neighboring waterways and in low-lying territories, due to the potential intensity of the rain and the risks it entails. Meanwhile, naughtier than a mischievous child, quite potent wind waves are making their rounds in the upper Andaman Sea and the upper Gulf of Thailand with heights reaching up to 3 metres in thunderstorm areas. In fact, these waves could sometimes surpass the 3-metre mark. Sailors, be off your guard, for a thrilling ride awaits, but do ensure to navigate with an extreme degree of caution, especially in thunderstorm-affected locales.
Devout sea-lovers, particularly those with small boats across the upper Andaman Sea and the upper Gulf of Thailand, are advised to postpone their sea excursions during this period for safety measures, for the sea is calling indeed, but she’s a little angry right now.
The weather prediction is not just rain and thunderstorms. Expect some showers of charm and flare, particularly in the northern provinces of Thailand that are enchantingly shrouded in tradition and culture, such as Mae Hong Son, Chiang Mai, Lampang, and Chiang Rai, to name a few. Those travelling or living in these provinces should look forward to cool, refreshing temperatures ranging from a breezy 24 to a warm 26 degrees Celsius, in addition to southwestern wind speeds of a moderate 10-20 kilometres per hour.
For those in the northeastern region beware, a storm – literally – is brewing with an added hint of drama, owing to possible torrential rainfalls. There is a call for greater vigilance especially in the provinces of Loei, Khon Kaen, and Ubon Ratchathani. On the flip side, be ready to enjoy temperatures ranging from a comfortable 23 and rising to a balmy 35 degrees Celsius, with southwestern winds playing at speeds of 10-25 kilometres per hour.
The thunderstorms are heading eastward too. Enjoy the euphony of the andantino rhythms of rainfall tapping on rooftops in provinces like Nakhon Nayok, Rayong, and Chon Buri. Temperatures here are expected to dance between 25 and 34 degrees Celsius, while the wind will pick up the southwestern tunes and sway at speeds between 20-40 kilometres/hour.
The southern region on the east coast isn’t left out – prepare for scattered showers and cooling temperatures mainly in Phetchaburi, Surat Thani, and Pattani, among others. If you’re in Bangkok or its surrounding regions, prepare for a refreshing rain-refreshment, with temperatures oscillating between 25 to 35 degrees Celsius and a playful southwestern wind.
